Decided to check out Sampannee on a Saturday night to satisfy a Thai craving!!!! They had seating available but we also saw an option to join a wait list. At that time wait was less than 5 minutes so we just walked over. We were able to take our pick of tables.
The decor is super cute as if you were sitting with family. Loved the pillows.
We have our favorites but decided to try different dishes. For apps, we got the undercover shrimp and the dirty wings with Larb seasoning
What is Larb??? Deliciousness, that's what! Wings were crisply breaded and sprinkled in this seasoning. We could eat these all by itself!
The undercover shrimp was shrimp fried in a roll. The sauce served was perfectly sweet with a slight kick.
For mains, we tried the yellow curry, and of course, I had to get pineapple fried rice. The pineapple rice comes with both chicken and shrimp here!!! Perfectly cooked veggies, perfect pineapple chunksand a perfect amount of raisins and cashews. You won't need any sauce for this rice. The flavors on its own are great!
Now to the yellow curry. They ask for your level of spice so you will get it how you like it. We chose medium! If we thought the pineapple rice was amazing. THE CURRY!!! It just blew us away. We tried it with both the bowl of white rice and the pineapple rice. Before leaving it was decided this place will have another visit so we can take food home!
Drinks (non alcoholic)- We tried the wonder berry and white peach. Wonderberry was our favorite. White leach was good but the peach flavor was more towards the bottom and gone after a few sips. The drink was left with a nice sweet lime flavor afterwards.
The staff was amazing and attentive. Great service. We were checked in regarding the timeliness of our food as well as for the taste. Very much appreciated.
Sampannee is pretty new and with this great food and service we look forward to returning again and again. This has been some of the best, most flavorful Thai food we've had and I have tried...
Read moreLocated in a bustling neighborhood of DuPont, just a little away from all the craziness, this restaurant sits one flight of stairs up from the road. The vibe here is Southeast Asian, with lots of vibrant colors and umbrellas hanging from the ceiling. The restaurant itself is somewhat narrow, and you’re seated quite close to the neighboring tables. As for the food, we started with the curry puffs, which weren’t particularly impressive. The spring rolls were oily and didn’t meet the usual Thai spring roll expectations — we could have skipped both appetizers. For the entrees, we ordered the vegetarian version of the Massaman curry and the Khao Soi with tofu and vegetables. Both were really tasty and definitely worth trying. However, the service was disappointing. We were seated but not attended to for at least 15 minutes. During that time, a few other tables were seated and had their orders taken. That felt odd. When our server finally arrived, she seemed rushed and not particularly happy to be helping us. When we asked a few questions about the menu (since it was our first time there), she responded rudely and begrudgingly, creating a rather hostile experience. She only checked in on us once during our entire visit. To be fair, a couple of other staff members who brought out our food were friendly and pleasant — but not the lady who initially served us. Maybe she didn’t speak the language well, but even so, good customer service goes a long way. Overall: the entrees were great, but the appetizers and service left a lot...
Read moreWe arrived at 8:30pm on a Friday night and the place was packed. The restaurant was small as is with approx 16 tables, seating 2-10. There is a small bar that seats maybe 5 but not sure how often they use it or allow people to actually sit there. Seeing that they were busy and that there weren’t that many tables open, my partner and I were asked if we would be fine sitting at the bar and we gladly took that option. The number of people waiting died down quickly tho since a lot of them were waiting for their takeout or were waiting for a big table to free up.
The service is super nice and friendly and even though they were busy, they were super ready to help out whenever we had a request.
We got the Thai tea which was delicious and a bit on the sweet side. They use half and half which I think tastes better than using condensed milk. We also got the undercover shrimp and that was really good too. The sweet chili sauce included was much better than what other restaurants serve, and I don’t remember if they say it is made in house or not.
Entree wise we got shrimp pad Thai and chicken basil fried rice. Both were really good and accurate to what we’ve had before in the past. The pad Thai, although not being marked as spicy, does have a little kick although more experienced spice eaters will not find any whatsoever. The basil fried rice is spicy per the menu but can be modified to accommodate tolerances higher and lower.
Sharing everything, it came out to ~$30 a person.
10/10...
