Camping Dates: July 3rd - 6th site 467
Location: Absolutely the most redeeming quality of this campground, If you enjoy biking this campground is in the perfect spot to take off on your bike all day and get to everything. Everything you need is within walking distance from the campground.
Sites: Poorly advertised site lengths. Most sites do not fit camper and truck. We put our camper(26DBH) in on the site(28ft) and it rejected the length so we called. They said that it would be no problem and we would be fine and still have room for a vehicle. We ended up booking over the phone. Was asked to park my truck an an "overflow" lot meant for visitors because it stuck into the road a few inches. My site had a boulder preventing me from parking my only vehicle. It also had a lamp post for some reason smack dab in the middle of what could've been a parking spot, with the brightest bulb they could find, that didn't turn off.
Value: On the cheaper side for a campground and the value seemed good for what we got.
Staff: I want to preface what I say here with most of the staff was barrable and nice and that we had issues with a select few. On the first day before we even checked in they had a "security guard" on a golf cart trying to direct "traffic". I was driving into the campground for the first time so I was trying to figure out where the reception is. there was one other camper in front of me and that's it. Apparently I missed this lady on her cart because she came zooming over and started yelling at me that I needed to follow her direction and park where she tells me. They don't have a guard shack or gate. She made me follow her in the cart to a spot to go check in and proceeded to yell at me "you need to follow directions, we are EXTREAMLY busy" (mind you they had available sites all weekend during the busiest time of the year). I figured they are stressed and shrugged it off. From that point forward this employee seemed to target me for the rest of my stay. They made me move my truck and didn't offer anything after I expressed my disappointment. I took my son over to one of the parks and was sitting with my Ebike (stupid fat tires don't fit in the bike rack) and she starts telling me I cant have my bike over by the table area because they have been having trouble with people (kids) causing issues. At this point it was getting hard to shrug things off. I had one final issue at the store with a different set of employees. I got my 3 year old son a toy boat that he wanted, she rang it up and my son being the 3 year old that he is wanted a different color. I tried to exchange it out and they told me all sales are final and that I could change the color out due to inventory and if he wanted it I would have to buy it. This was all in the same few minutes... Needless to say I wont be coming back to this campground even though it is in the perfect spot to visit wells beach.
Cleanliness: Campground was clean for the most park, cant say much for bathrooms other than when my wife used the bathroom on the way out the door fell off the hinges.
Facilities: Store closes at 6pm on the weekends?! Pool looked clean but we didn't use it since it was way too small and the amount of people made it too crazy. You get charged a resort fee for some reason on top of your site fee for what? Two rusty parks for the kids and a mini golf course that you have to pay to use. I wasn't aware of any activities for the kids but I was salty from my experience with the staff to even look.
Id like to end this with a final recommendation: For the value I would say if you can get past the rude employees, tiny sites, and mediocre facilities, it would be worth it just for the wells beach area. But save yourself from the stress and rent a motel down the beach area for a...
Read moreClean facilities and well kept but sites (we had a large premium back in) are very narrow and open with limited privacy. Their rules are written in a way that makes it almost impossible to interpret when quiet hours are. It states: "Our quiet hours are from 11pm - 8am daily, unless otherwise dictated by on-site staff or local regulations. Please be courteous to your fellow guests during all hours of the day." So basically if you're near people who want you quiet at 8pm (or in our case 9:15pm) they will enforce it. In our case a bunch of kids were playing a relatively loud game; yes they are kids, they are loud, they were having fun and not on devices. It was 9:15 and while a couple of rude guests did ask them (via yelling and approaching parents) to quiet down, one of the workers heard them from the other side of the property (narrow property at that) he came over and rudely yelled at the kids directly after we said they were ours (we had 4 sites there, 17 people total). Upon approaching him to de-escalate the situation he proceeded to be very disrespectful to us as the parents, telling us to control our kids and how to parent them and wouldn't listen to any reason. The following day the GM called me and they came to our site to discuss what happened. The GM was very polite but basically re-iterated the policy I stated above which is vague. The other worker did apologize on request. We have camped at a lot of different campgrounds and never experienced something like this. While there were no issues for the rest of the stay, I would NOT return to this location and truly hope other Sun Outdoors locations approach conflict in...
Read moreWe had a very disappointing experience at Sun Outdoors Wells Beach. We visited as two couples (4 adults) and unfortunately made a mistake during the booking process. As Canadians, our English is not perfect, and we misunderstood the “pop-up tent” option.
When we arrived on Friday evening, instead of receiving understanding or assistance, we were told the campground was full and that we could only stay one night, all four of us on the same site. This was especially frustrating because we had paid for two sites with water and electricity. We were simply told it was our mistake, and that there was nothing they could do for us.
What made the situation even worse was the way it was handled. If the staff had at least taken the time to listen to us, it would have made a difference. Instead, we were constantly interrupted, not given the chance to fully explain, and left with no options.
To add to the frustration, we were also charged an extra fee for a second vehicle, even though we had booked and paid for two sites, which should naturally include two vehicles. On top of that, we were not even allowed to park the second vehicle on our own site. This felt completely unreasonable.
It is very disappointing to drive 5 hours expecting a weekend getaway, only to be told we had to leave the next morning.
In the end, we had no choice but to leave and drive to Sun Outdoors Old Orchard Beach, and what a difference it was! The staff there were welcoming, helpful, and the whole place was much better managed. The detour was absolutely worth it.
Unfortunately, this was a very negative experience, and we do not feel that the campground is welcoming...
