Title: An Authentic and Cultural Asado Experience with AsadoAdventure!
I haven't done many food tours, and I wanted something authentic and cultural. There are many asado-type tours around, but I was looking for something that would help me learn more about Argentina, not just get fed some great food. I am so glad I chose AsadoAdventure!
First of all, the house is amazing. It started out as a bakery in 1890 and has had different uses over the years. The current owners bought this house from an artist who used part of the building as her studio for making sculptures. The living quarters were in the middle, and the front, which now has a store, was her art gallery.
We walked into a large open space that served as a living room, dining room, and kitchen, with large windows letting in plenty of natural light. The ceilings were 30 feet high! The kitchen was a professional-grade kitchen. The living room had a large flat-screen TV displaying a carousel of photos from all the tours, accompanied by Argentine music.
The experience began with learning how to light the grill using wood and charcoal. We also learned how to make chimichurri. After that, we went out to buy some more ingredients for the asado. On the way to the butcher and the cheese shop, we stopped at a local plaza and learned about the history of the neighborhood, including the time period when Argentina had a military dictatorship. We admired several pieces of street art and learned the stories behind them, adding depth to the beautiful images we saw.
At the cheese shop, we sampled some cheeses before buying provoleta and more cheese for the picada (traditional charcuterie). Because we were part of a large group, we went straight back to the house, where the sommelier was waiting to guide us through a wine tasting.
Next, we saw how the grill master organized the grill and all the cuts he was grilling for us that day. We started with grilled provoleta, a modified provolone cheese grilled in a porcelain pan with divots, making each bite include the crunchy caramelized part of the cheese. We also had chorizo (pork sausage) and morcilla (blood sausage) spread on bread and topped with salsa criolla, made with bell peppers, tomatoes, onion, lemon, vinegar, and oil. The mollejas (sweetbreads) were amazingly prepared, crunchy on the outside and tender in the middle.
These were followed by matambrito (pork flank steak), marinated overnight in vinegar, lemon, garlic, and pizza seasonings. It was a flavor bomb and very tender.
We had two types of steak, Bife de Chorizo (strip steak) and Picanha (Rump Cap). Both were perfectly cooked medium rare and extremely delicious. Everyone clapped for the asador (grill master), as is customary, and we truly felt the appreciation.
For dessert, we were pleasantly surprised to find out that even this came from the grill. It was a grilled yam, with caramelized pecans drizzled with a South American tree syrup called Chañar. It was topped with vanilla ice cream and sprinkled with pink Himalayan salt.
This tour was more than just a meal—it was a deep dive into Argentine culture, history, and culinary traditions. I highly recommend AsadoAdventure to anyone looking for an authentic and enriching experience in...
Read moreMy wife and I booked the Palermo Food and Wine Tour with Asado Adventure Foods. We like the experience of guided food tours, especially when we have never been to that city before. It gives us insight into the history and culture of a place and its people. We booked the tour a year in advance with the owner Frank who was also very helpful providing information on local hotels, sights and restaurants. On the morning of the tour, we were reminded by text where to meet our guide and advised to be sure to dress comfortably and wear a hat as the weather was going to be sunny and very hot. We met our vibrant and engaging guide Natalia at a local restaurant where we enjoyed coffee and pastries while she discussed the days offering. Our day took us to the botanical gardens, where Natalia came prepared with bug spray, just in case, then past local historical sites where she took pictures of us and the sites and told us about the history of what we were seeing. We then moved on to food tastings at several local eateries, places that you would never know to stop at on your own, but at which we enjoyed delicious examples of the local food and Natalia told us about the customs surrounding food and family in Chile. Finally, we stopped for wine tasting at the Miravida Hotel and Wine Bar where Sandra, the very knowledgeable Hotel sommelier shared some delicious wines. Between the food and wine stops, Natalia took us on a tour of local wall art in the Palermo area providing us with information on the history of the area, the artists and Chile. Throughout the tour Natalia made sure to check on our comfort (it was a very hot day) and made sure we had plenty of water and shade. This was an exceptional tour and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. It was...
Read moreMy husband and I had an amazing time on the Original Asado Food Tour led by Frank, the owner, this weekend. Not only did we have an immersive and fun experience in preparing the ingredients and the grill, Frank also took us meat shopping and wine tasting for the asado in his beautiful neighbourhood of Palermo Viejo while giving us a history of the area and his personal journey at the same time.
The best part of the tour was, of course, enjoying the different meats from the asado and the wonderfully fresh vegetables Frank and his team put together for us in the lovely courtyard of his home. The selection of local wine and spirit over the course of the meal could easily be eclipsed by the maté experience at the end.
Frank was fantastic in bringing everyone in our small group of 5 together and we truly enjoyed the company. The other 3 members of the tour were actually Argentines so we learnt so much about the food, culture, people and history of the country from them and Frank.
I could not think of a better way to experience asado other than being in someone’s home and Frank shared with us this experience.
Bonus - There is so much to do and see in Palermo Viejo. The young, vibrant and family friendly neighbourhood is packed with restaurants, bars,...
