BEWARE!! You will not get close to the Viedma glacier with the tours they currently offer, not anymore.
Completely mis-sold and mislead by the staff here. Their photo's and information about what is available to you right now is not accurate!
We were lead to believe and shown pictures that the boat and peninsula hike would get you alongside and close to the glacier, this is not true. The hike takes you very slowly from getting off the boat over the peninsula and opposite the glacier roughly 300-400 meters away from the front of the glacier. I don't consider that next to, alongside or above the glacier like we were told. The guides were nice, friendly and informative though.
Once back on the boat it takes you around the peninsula in sight of the glacier and to the side, NOT in front of it at all, in any way like the photos show. Roughly 250 meters away still not that close... You get about 15 minutes at the closest point (still quite far away) of the glacier on the boat to take pictures, again the guide was nice, friendly and pleasant. The boat started to turn back well before we got to the front corner of the ice and I asked our guide "are we not getting any closer than this?". She explained that it's too dangerous and we must stay this far away in case any ice floats up from under the water or breaks off the glacier. We all know it 'calves' and breaks off frequently. Why sell something that you don't follow through on. Anyone still considering this tour, either the boat trip with or without the hike must know the glacier is receding very fast and you will not get as close as you hope to or told you will by this tour company!! Compared to Perito Moreno this is less impressive even though it's much bigger you probably won't have as good an experience as you may have at Perito Moreno, the boat trips are also less than half price there and last twice as long, getting closer than they do at Viedma. What ever you decide, enjoy this art of Patagonia,...
Read moreI am reviewing the 1 day Cagliero glacier hike with via ferrata experience offered by Fitz Roy Expeditions. First off, booking was very easily done through email, on the website it says the service is not available on Sundays but we did our hike on a Sunday with no issues. Paid via PayPal. In terms of the views, they are incredible. You head into the Los Huemules private reserve, and hike uphill for around 2hrs to reach the first stop to put on harnesses for the via ferrata. Next you climb up and down cliff faces with the aid of via ferratas for about 1hr to reach the second stop which is where there are 2 domes (for people doing an overnight experience). There you get fitted for your crampons. Then you get onto the glacier and spend about 1-1.5hrs depending on the weather conditions. No ice climbing is done. Then you go back on the same route you came from, with aching muscles and beautiful memories. This is one of the toughest experiences I've done in the area, just because of the length of the day and the varied activities. The group also set a fast pace, I am not a super slow hiker but I struggled to keep up, and at one point I was told by a fellow hiker that the guide was privately worried that I won't make it. Because I was the slowest, on parts of the via ferrata and hiking, there were times when I was alone and felt just a little bit concerned that if something was to happen that no one would be there to help. And at the end of the day when we reached the pick up point, the guide then told us that we had reached 1hr earlier than expected. So much for all that rushing. This is why the review is 4 stars instead of 5. Still an absolutely amazing experience, but do make sure that you are of good fitness before attempting this trip. And hot tip, bring along an empty bottle and fill up with fresh glacial water on...
Read moreI payed 7300 Pesos for the Ice trekking tour. They told me that i will have 1.5 hours walking on the Ice but it was only half an hour walk. As i talked to them after the trekking about that they told me it wasn’t enough time because some people were slow in the Grupp. Actually the guide spend a lot time in each break we had and on the way back he said the whole time faster faster and then he just walked fast and left us alone. Just don’t do this ice trekking in el chalten. There is only this company who offers the tour and you need to pay what they say. There is better and cheaper in ushuaia when you starting from south or in tranquilo for much...
