Battery Hill in Port Fairy, Victoria

The town of Port Fairy on the south coast of Victoria is home to a historical site known as the Battery. This attraction commemorates the early defence of the region during the 19th century

The Port Fairy Battery is a must-visit attraction for anyone interested in Australian history, particularly the military and defence of the country during the colonial era. The site is located on a bluff overlooking the Moyne River and Port Fairy Bay. It features a preserved artillery battery that was originally built in 1889 as part of the region's defences against the perceived threat of a Russian attack.

Visitors can walk through the battery and explore the various structures and gun emplacements. There are informative signs throughout the site that provide insight into the history of the battery and its role in the region's defence. One of the most impressive features is the remaining 80-pounder rifled muzzle loader gun, which is one of the last of its kind in Australia.

The views from the battery are also stunning, offering a panoramic perspective of the surrounding coastline and waterways. On a clear day, you can see for miles out to sea. There are picnic tables and benches scattered around the site, making it an ideal spot to take a break and enjoy the scenery.

One of the best aspects of the Port Fairy Battery is its accessibility. The site is free to visit and is open daily from 9am to 5pm. There is a car park located near the entrance, and the walking paths are well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels. The battery is also easily reached from the town centre of Port Fairy, either on...

Scenic History and Adventure Await at Battery Hill!

Venturing from central Port Fairy town to Battery Hill was a highlight of my visit. The walk itself was enjoyable, offering glimpses of the surrounding landscape as we made our way uphill.

Upon reaching the summit, we were greeted with breathtaking scenery and a fascinating collection of restored WW1/2 artillery. The careful preservation and restoration efforts truly allow visitors to appreciate the historical significance of the site.

For those seeking a bit of adventure, there's also a trail to explore, which I found to be quite manageable. However, I must admit, the video I captured while running the trail was a bit bumpy, so viewers should watch at their own discretion – it's a humorous reminder of the journey!

Overall, Battery Hill offers a perfect blend of history, scenery, and adventure, making it a must-visit destination for anyone...

Battery Hill is located at Port Fairy’s picturesque harbour with lots of history to tell. This place is overlooking Griffiths Island from the breakwater since this is just on the opposite side. This is also the access point to a breakwater where you can fish. There is also access to Bells beach.

Picnic tables and bbq available. Lots of walking and beautiful viewing to do. Fish n chips is 5 min drive away. Parking is few but not so busy at all. No...
