Cannings Free Range Butchers Kew — Local services in Melbourne

I've been going to Cannings Kew for years and spend approximately $130 a week there. Their meat is good, but I recently had an experience that has put me off returning. I ordered a single chicken breast costing $5 and then realised that I had left my wallet at home. Given that I was a long time and regular customer and my order was very minimal (all of which I advised the staff member of), I requested that I either pay the $5 the next day or I call from home in 5 minutes and provide my credit card number. The staff member kindly sought to check this with the manager/owner, who refused to oblige my request. I advised that I've consistently spent a lot of money at Cannings over many years of custom and was caring for two young children alone, and that it would be difficult for me to return that evening.........and basically, that I was good for the $5. This was insufficient for the manager/owner, who asked that I return with appropriate payment in order to complete the $5 purchase. I was pretty shocked, given my long custom and the small price. This was a really poor and disappointing customer experience and demonstrated that the manager/owner not only does not value customer loyalty nor customer relationships, but also lacks empathy and common sense..........what happened to helping a long serving and valuable customer out after so many years of custom? With more than the normal share of distractions coming into Christmas, I had left my meat shopping to the last minute. Bought lamb, ham and a turkey-breast roll from Kew. The lamb was perfectly fresh and just wonderful. Slow-roasting yielded succulent meat and a perfectly clean bone. Turkey is often trickey - double so for white meat - but the breast roll was delicious and moist. (Cooked to internal temp of 75°C and rested.) No regrets. The ham is simply sublime.
