have been desperate to get to this shop after I saw it on Postcards ages ago. What drew my interest was that the batter looked like it would be light and cripsy and the chips looked homemade and like chip shaped roast potatoes. Finally just went and ate it today and was so happy to find it met all my expectations! I LOVED THESE FISH AND CHIPS!!! And I only like chips one way and these are the way I like them. THANK YOU for living up to the hype. Yes, I read the reviews before I went and ALMOST didn't go. But taste and experience is pretty subjective plus the shop people can have good and bad days, so I tried it anyway. SO HAPPY!!!! And I loved the tartare sauce. I didn't have the mushy peas because I don't like peas. I had the potato scallop too. That fish was white, perfectly cooked and tasted fresh, the chips were SOOOOO moist yet fluffy on the inside, NOT dry at all, and the outside had crunch yet they were sort of soft and bendy at the same. JUST THE WAY I LIKE THEM!!!! The potato scallop had, in my opinion, too much batter. A REALLY thin batter please because couldn't taste the potato at all, however the potato was a perfect texture. The fish batter was SUPERBLY crisp and light. I peeled off half the side though because still a bit too much batter for me. Yes, like a lot of reviews said, there was a lot of oil on my fingers, but I didn't find the batter or chips oily at all. So thank you for living up to my expectations.
Two suggestions - thinner batter on everything, turn down the music because it was like being at a club and it was practically IMPOSSIBLE to hear one's name being called. It wasn't just me who kept not hearing my name not being called. There were many young people in their 20's who didn't hear either. Too loud, and also people are standing outside to wait for their orders, so turn the music way down, or not have it at all preferably, so we can hear. There were at least 5 people in a row who hadn't heard their names being called and their orders were waiting at the counter. To get over the loudness of the music, the staff have to really yell so the people outside can hear which is then too loud for the customers that are right...
Read moreNot local to the area, but been meaning to try this place for a while - finally got a chance a few weeks back, and it did not disappoint! Hands down one of the best chip shops in Melbourne! Will definitely revisit next time we're passing St Kilda. Being ex-pats, we've really missed the quality hand-cut chips and meats/fish from the UK and Ireland, and this place is as close as you can get. The chips were spot on - makes it difficult to order chips anywhere else now once you've tasted these ones. The menu isn't huge but I think that's a good thing - they are concentrating on a handful of speciality items and do them well. On this occasion, we got 2 battered Irish sausage suppers (or 'Golden Torches') with gravy and curry. They hit the spot. Saw other people with the fish and it looked good as well. A little bit of a wait for the food (mainly because they were so busy and it was Saturday night), but absolutely worth it as they prepare it all fresh. Also a little but more expensive than your standard fish and chip shop, but we'd say it's 100% worth it. Can't wait to visit again and try a few other items off the menu - perhaps they fancy opening up a second location in the...
Read more40min wait for fish and chips! It's not worth the wait or money.
I've been wanting to come here for years and finally did. Got there for opening at 4 pm on a saturday. I ordered 2 fish and chips and 2 kids ones. Was 3rd to order. Waited for 40 mins!!! Why does it take 40 mins to make fish and chips when they just opened. Surely, they were ready for ordering, right? Imagine waiting for 40 minutes with a 3 and 5 yesr old and your wife looking at you like why is this taking so long. I have no idea why.
Anyway, food portions were massive (still not worth the money). I didn't need that much. Could have shared 1 adult and 1 kids so I could have saved 42 dollars!
Fish was good, nice and thick, and flakey Batter was decent. curry sauce tasted authentic highlight for me. Chips were really disappointing, not like british chip shop chips at all. Soggy, even though they looked cooked 2 or 3 times, and I have 2 massive tubs of them left at home, I hardly ate any of them. Everything tasted extra oily as well.
Would I go again? 100% no
I'd hate to think how long you would have to wait on a busy day. And definitely not worth the wait no matter how much you miss uk...
