Hotel Barkly — Restaurant in Melbourne

I have been working at Barkley’s for about two months now, but before that I was a guest. That should say something about why I decided to seek out a job here; I was immediately attracted to the atmosphere of the place. From the get-go the bar staff was fabulous and always made me laugh. With that being said, when I went into the kitchen of the bar to seek out a job as a kitchen hand I felt very comfortable and confident doing so, because I had already had such a good experience with the staff as a guest. I am happy to say that I have been just as impressed by the kitchen staff, even since my first meeting with the head chef, Matty. Not only is he such a sound lad (as said by me, as well as everyone who knows him), but he has brought me to such a place of comfort in the workplace that I can completely be myself during each shift. And I mean that quite literally. He is the type of personality that makes someone excited to come into work simply for the excuse of getting to spend time with them. Not only that, but him and the rest of the bar and kitchen staff are so understanding of the few (many) little mistakes and dilemmas I have managed to have during my time here. Matty, Ash, and Ashley are so dedicated to their role as chefs, to the point where it actually surprised me when I first began working with them. They manage to pay such attention to detail regarding taste and presentation of their meals without ever falling into the unfortunately stereotypical representation of a “mean chef”, and I consider myself so lucky for that. My time as an employee has been too short, but the memories that I have made in this kitchen (and the delicious food I have gotten to enjoy) will forever and truly be treasured in my heart as I continue on my travels. The hostel itself is alright, the kitchen is very small, but it's kept clean. The big improvement they need are the people taking the bookings. I made a booking via their website, but phoned in to change the dates. I arrived to check in at the new changed date, only to find out they didnt' actually change it in the system! Luckily they had a room, though it meant i had to move rooms a couple of times during my 3 night stay....which is a pain. I check out at the proper time. A few days later I notice on my bank statement that they hotel charged me for another nights accommodation, apparently the people working the desk STILL didn't update the booking in their system, even after I checked in and out. ...

WOW!!!! Everything 10/10, the drinks are so reasonably priced, the atmosphere was great and cosy & the staff…. Just unbelievable! Matty & Gonzo you are superstars, so kind and always welcoming with a smile. It’s not often the chef comes out and the bar manger is so present but these guys were just fabulous! The girls Maisie and Beth behind the bar also brilliant and attentive, helping suggest the specials and making brilliant espresso martinis. We ate twice here over 2 days, the steak - brilliant!
