A lot of people comment that the place went downhill after the new owner took over. Personally, I like that it is now possible to pay by card and it still feels very Italian. It’s a bit of a shame that the spaghetti is no longer available as a cheaper children’s portion. Honestly, I would rather buy three small ones than one big portion, but otherwise I don’t think the new menu is bad at all.

But honestly, the rebranding was very poorly executed. A change of ownership should not impact the Google rating, and the fact that the advertising company that consulted on this managed to make it worse is unbelievable.

For what it’s worth, I always thought the very Italian waiter was the owner. In my opinion, that guy is 90% of the restaurant’s identity. He really deserves a raise from time to time, he’s a great guy.

I loved how, on my first visit, he put tons of ice waffles on the table without mentioning that they cost extra. It felt so authentically Italian when I realized at the end that I had eaten twice the price of the ice in waffles and he sent me to the nearest ATM 🤣

Ich war jahrzehntelang ein Giardino-Fan, gestehe aber durchaus zu, dass man auch Neuerungen akzeptieren muss. Das Eis bei Surace ist zugegebenermaßen gut bis sehr gut (Himbeer ist weiterhin sehr gut; die neue Sorte Sacher Torte ist extrem gut). Einige Sorten waren - zumindest aus meiner Sicht - bei Giardino besser, namentlich Joghurt (gibt es bei Surace nur mehr in Kombination mit eingelegten, picksüßen Granatapfelkernen - das zerstört leider den bisher leicht säuerlichen Charakter des bisherigen reinen Joghurt-Eises); auch Topfen ist etwas süßer und weniger säuerlich, Generell nehme ich einen Trend zu etwas süßerem Eis war - Giardino hatte durchwegs einen etwas säuerlichen Touch (zB auch bei Heidelbeer und Erdbeer). Wie gesagt ist aber das Eis durchaus gut und deshalb gebe ich auch 4 Sterne. Wenn der neue Eigentümer einen etwas säuerlichen (bzw weniger süßen) Stil einschlägt, gibt es den 5. Stern ;-). Die Preise sind leider raufgegangen (zugegebenermaßen wie bei vielen anderen Eisgeschäften in Wien auch - wobei Giardino früher zu den günstigeren Eisgeschäften gehört hat - das ist leider passé); Es schmerzt, dass man Eisboxen nur mehr in (nicht sehr umweltschonenden) Styroporboxen (und nicht mehr in reinen Alu-Wannen) bekommt. Ebenfalls geben die Verkäufer nur noch eine Sorte pro Kugel (in den traditionellen Wiener Eisgeschäften ist es üblich, dass man bei der zweit-kleinsten Tüte mit zwei Kugeln trotzdem 3 Sorten - dh eine Kugel mit zwei Sorten - bekommt). Vielleicht kann sich der neue Eigentümer auch dieser Wiener Tradition wieder...
