Pretty much the dictionary definition of a "meh" railway station. The outside is pretty, but the inside is chaotic and unattractive. There are plenty of shops, but most of them are not worth writing home about. The renovation project that's going on right now looks promising to me, and the few tracks that have been modernised so far look a lot better, are cleaner, and are less cluttered, but it's not expected to be over before sometime next decade, so the only part of it we can experience right now is a slippery and needlessly narrow passage from the "old side" to the "new side" of the station.
If your trip includes a change here, do some research beforehand (what's the next train I can take if I miss this one, et cetera). This applies especially if you're planning to include buses or trams in Ghent in your trip. To me or any other regular commuter, navigating the station is easy, but if you've never been here before, you will probably either be confused or frustrated when trying to figure out where and when the next train to Brussels arrives, and which one you're supposed to take in the first place.
Also, expect delays. Lots of delays. Peak hours regularly come with twenty or so more minutes of...

As a Local Guide Level 8, I’ve passed through many stations—but Gent-Sint-Pieters is truly a gem in transition. ✨
This station beautifully blends two worlds: on one side, you’re greeted by a charming historical façade with classical details and timeless architecture. On the other, sleek modern design and airy glass ceilings offer a fresh, open vibe. It’s a fascinating contrast that makes every visit feel like stepping between past and future.
Yes, there are ongoing renovations, but don’t let that discourage you. The station remains clean, functional, and surprisingly photogenic even in its current state. 🚧📸
Plenty of shops, friendly staff, and good signage. Whether you're arriving in Ghent or just passing through, take a moment to look around—this station is more than just a stop, it’s an experience. 👣

Read moreWe traveled to Ghent several months ago, and some parts of the station are under construction, especially platform #8 where there is no elevator or escalator but only temporary construction-type of stairs (dangerous and high). Ghent train station still sent train to platform 8 so good luck to people who travel with big suitcases like us or people in wheelchair etc... Once we finally brought the suitcases down from the platform, then there were other stairs up and down to go to the main hall with ticket counters. We tried to ask the train employees, but it's just hopeless and nobody cares... and there are no signs, either. It's just a terrible experience we had with Ghent train station.
Hope now the construction is done and have better travel-friendly...
