Sandown Market — Local services in Toronto

Sandown is my absolute favourite Japanese grocery store in Toronto and the GTA for the following reasons: The owners are SUPER genuinely friendly The owners always provide over-the-top amazing customer service and go above and beyond to help you find anything you need The store is fully stocked with everything you need to cook delicious Japanese meals, i.e., sushi-grade fish, miso, frozen gyozas, natto, rice, etc. Everything in the store is priced really well!

I always go with the intention of just picking up essentials, and always wind up coming home with extra rice crackers and sweets because there are so many goodies! My husband can attest to this fact.

I HIGHLY recommend this store for all Japanese food and goodies if you live in the GTA, especially if you are like me and like supporting mom-and-pop shops as opposed to big Asian grocery store chains. Sandown looks like a small store from the outside, but once you enter, you'll quickly realize that they have so much more than you could've imagined! They even have things like soy sauce containers, soba dishes, masks, and Japanese toiletries! I will be picking up some Japanese dishes the next time I go. Another thing, if you are looking to make a specific dish or are looking for something specific like ingredients to make a negitoro roll, I would recommend that you ask the owner as he will show you where to find everything and even explain how you should cut the piece of tuna. I love this store! The lady working there is capable of cheering up absolutely anyone no matter how tough of a day they are having! Although very tiny, the store is very well looked after and you will find any Japanese item that you are searching for, and unlike other Asian stores that are always dirty, all the items in this super clean store are top notch and will never be covered in rat urine. In this store about half of the items are imported from Japan, other half are imported from Japanese manufacturers in USA. Due to this if you are planning to get sweets or snack foods I advice you to get only Japanese snacks and leave USA snacks as is because although delicious, they won't deliver authentic Japanese flavor. However if you are not after authenticity but simply want a tasty treat then everything in the store is perfect. I advice you to visit the store just to talk to super awesome cheery lady....

I had a great experience today at Sandown Market. It was my first time at the store. I had found the store via google search with the goal of looking for an Japanese grocery store that sells sushi grade sashimi/fish, hojicha tea, takoyaki, kewpie, bonito flakes, and Japanese snacks. It’s nice to walk into a store and be greeted with a warm friendly hello and smile that you can see right through the mask:) The store was very clean, The energy and vibe was great:) I was offered help and if I had any questions, which I did to just ask:) all my groceries were packaged in a box and the lady even offered to bring it to my car. What an amazing business. This is the first review I have written in 2020! Service like this is really rare these days. I will keep coming back and supporting this business.
