Always a fun place with a great outdoor atmosphere. I had gone a few times before the last, but that last visit was shocking. I first went to the fishing section where i had staff giving me dirty looks. I then moved over the the hunting section. I was in the market for a new pellet rifle, and had saw one online that fit my needs. I went to the counter with the website opened on my phone and asked one of the counter attendants if he was busy. I then walked up to the counter, showed him the website on my phone, and asked him if they had any in stock. He very leaned away from the counter, crossed his arms and said ânoâ with a terrible attitude. He just stared at me for a few seconds before I asked him if he knew when they would get them back in stock. He then proceeded to cut me off and ask how old I was (im 15). I told him my age and then he said with the most unfriendly look and tone âeven if we had it in stock I couldnât sell it to you.â. Now, if you know Canadian gun laws, youâd know that you need to be 18 to purchase a BB gun. I was with my dad at the time and he agreed to purchase it earlier. After he said that he scoffed. I then told him that my dad would be buying it for me, to which he responded with an âok? Iâm still not going to sell it to youâ. He then walked off. My dad and I then found another employee who worked behind the counter. (By this time I had planned on purchasing a different BB gun they had in stock). With the box in hand, we went to the counter again. The employee was on the computer and did not even greet us or show any interest in helping us. We told him that my dad wanted to buy this BB gun, and he asked us âis it locked?â. We didnât know what he meant so we asked what it means, to which he said âk, was it over in the isle or behind the counterâ, sounding almost frustrated with us. Throughout the purchase he ignored 3 of our questions and said âitâs final saleâ, handed us the receipt, and walked off. Bass Pro Shops is truly an experience, not just a store. From the moment you walk in, youâre greeted with the scent of adventureâliterally and figuratively. The place is hugeâa massive retail space that feels more like an outdoor museum or theme park than a store. Whether youâre into fishing, camping, hiking, hunting, boating, or just exploring nature, youâll find something here that catches your eye.
The variety is phenomenal. Rows upon rows of fishing rods, tackle boxes, and lures for every level of angler. A whole section just for hunting gear with everything from camo to crossbows. The camping area is fully stocked with tents, cookers, survival kits, and even gourmet trail snacks. And if youâre a boating enthusiast, the showroom with actual boats and ATVs on display is a real highlight. Even if youâre not buying, itâs fun to browse.
The store layout is beautifully themedâfrom the rustic wood interiors to the giant aquariums filled with local fish species and the stuffed wildlife scattered throughout. Itâs like walking through a mini wilderness. Kids love it, and itâs a great stop for families. You could honestly spend an hour or more here just exploring.
The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, especially in specialized areas like archery or firearms. Theyâre always willing to answer questions and recommend products based on your experience level and budget.
Prices are fair for what youâre gettingâhigh-quality, durable gear made for serious outdoor use. They often have seasonal promotions or clearance sections that are worth checking out.
Thereâs also a section for clothing and footwear with a solid mix of performance gear and casual wear. And donât miss the fudge shop near the checkoutâitâs a hidden gem and makes the visit even sweeter.
One small drawback: the checkout line can get a bit long on weekends or holidays, so be prepared to wait a little.

Signs are posted throughout the entrance and exits of the store stating that âFirst Nations Status Card holders must check out at Customer Service onlyâ, as they are not allowed to use regular cash registers. As a First Nations woman, I was stunned to be told where I can and cannot pay simply because of my race in 2025. No other Canadian retailer Iâve encountered has ever refused to let Indigenous customers use a cashier. This policy is both discriminatory & dehumanizing. Given this modern-day racial segregation, I half-expected there to be a âNatives onlyâ washroom too.
When I asked customer service if they could politely pass along my racial segregation concerns to management, I was told this is how it is at every store. This normalized racial segregation in 2025 demonstrates a systemic refusal to train all staff on how to properly process tax-exempt purchases for First Nations people, something every other retailer in the province seems capable of doing.
This is the same Vaughan store that was previously reported for photocopying and storing copies of Indian status cards in-store for past customers; a direct violation of privacy, which instead of correcting course, theyâve doubled down by publicly refusing to service First Nations people at their cashiers.
On top of the humiliation, the fishing section was in shambles with at least 75% of walleye-related baits, jigs, and tackle being completely out of stock, and despite spending nearly two hours in the department, not one employee offered assistance.
I left the store feeling uncomfortable, and deeply disappointed. This is not just bad customer service, this is modern racial segregation. Bass Pro Shops needs to be held accountable and this policy needs to end, with proper employee training being given to cashiers to remove this racial barrier.
