On September 19, 2025, I had one of the most humiliating shopping experiences of my life at this Staples location (Park Royal, West Vancouver).
When I first approached the counter, two female staff were standing there. One looked busy helping a customer, but the other had nothing to do — yet she ignored me completely and made no effort to help me check out. After I waited a while, they pointed me to register #4. But when I walked there, I saw no staff. I waited and looked around; I am certain employees saw me, but no one came over or offered help. Finally, I raised my voice to ask, “Can I check out at #4?” Jasmine came over without a single word, without any greeting, and without any expression — just silence. She scanned my items in silence, I tapped my card, and the only words she said were “Here you go” as she handed me the receipt.
As I turned to leave, I suddenly heard loud laughter from a tall, middle-aged male staff member with glasses. I turned around and asked him: “Are you laughing at me?” He said yes. I asked, “Are you laughing at me, the customer?” He again said yes. I asked why, and he answered: “Because I’m laughing at how someone can be so rude.” When I pressed further, he confirmed he was calling me rude. Meanwhile, Jasmine stood there smirking and laughing as well.
This was open mockery and public humiliation — not only witnessed by other customers, but also other staff. I asked both of them to apologize immediately. They refused, continued laughing, and walked away.
I spoke to the general manager, who at least listened, apologized on behalf of Staples, and waived my purchase. But I never received an apology from the actual employees who insulted me. Worse, another customer came forward to the manager and reported that Jasmine and the tall male staff continued to laugh and make fun of me even after I raised my complaint.
This was not just poor service. This was disrespect, public humiliation, and clear signs of racial discrimination. I am Chinese, and I cannot help but ask myself — if I were not Chinese, would I have been treated the same way?
This was not even my first unpleasant encounter with Jasmine. She consistently comes across as cold, never greets customers with warmth, never smiles, and shows little interest in helping. As for the tall male with glasses, my friend has also had bad experiences — he is known for being rude to customers. So this is not an isolated incident.
I have raised this issue with Staples’ head office, but so far their responses have been generic apologies that avoid addressing the heart of the problem. I am asking for:
A direct, sincere apology from Jasmine and the tall male associate.
Accountability: staff who mock, insult, and humiliate customers in public should not remain in customer service roles.
Compensation for the emotional harm and public humiliation I suffered.
Until Staples addresses this issue seriously, I cannot recommend this store. Customers deserve respect and dignity, not ridicule and discrimination.
The only one star is for the store manager, which is nice and polite, tried his best to help and support me...
Read moreI recently visited the store to purchase 2x4 Avery labels and inquired if I could print them there. I had a USB with me containing the template and asked the staff for assistance.
At the printing desk, staff members informed me that I could not print those labels and that I could only do so using Staples' labels. This would have required placing an order and waiting 2-5 business days, depending on the quality and quantity of labels. Of course, the pricing would have been higher.
I had previously visited the same store and was informed otherwise by Somayeh, a very professional and kind store manager. At that point, I was confused. I then requested to speak with the store manager, Mr. Sam Vijeh, who informed me of a CORPORATE POLICY that prohibits customers from buying Avery labels and then printing them in the store. Consequently, I had to request a refund for the labels I had initially purchased, understand my options, and consider to return later. This was a significant waste of my time.
I then decided to visit another store in North Vancouver, BC, where a very professional and friendly store manager (Marieh) assisted me in printing my labels using my document saved on my USB, with the Avery labels I purchased—once again—from that store. No questions were asked, and no corporate policies prevented me from printing those labels.
Mr. Sam Vijeh's behavior was very unprofessional. He did not attempt to help me or understand the situation. He lied about the above mentioned corporate policy nor he did not try to help me in any way. His conduct was unacceptable, and against any standard customer service policy.
Needless to say, I was very disappointed and annoyed by this experience. If you are on the North Shore, don't waste your time going to this store. Aside from Somayeh, the other staff I have interacted with was not professional and they acted as if they were doing me a favour. Go to the store on Marine Drive instead, customer service...
