Teatro Capitol (Theater Capital) opened in the city centre of Macau in 1931. During its peak, the cinema had seating capacity of 837 seats. It architecturally featured a high arched door entrance, typical of early cinemas in Macau and Hong Kong. This has been preserved as part of recent building restorations, allowing visitors today to view the outside of Teatro Capital as it was in the 1930s.
Unfortunately, the cinema showed its last movie and closed in 1987. Afterwards, the building was refit for low-end retail shops and eateries on the ground floor. There were attempts to make use of the upper floors in later years but little success was found in those endeavours. For much time the majority of the old Teatro Capitol building has been left abandoned.
In 2019 the building was given major restorations and reopened with modern floors with floorspace for new shops a well as a refurbished cinema hall that is intended for showings in the near future. A casa de espetáculos tinha 869 lugares, de plateia e 'galeria', era assim que chamava ao primeiro balcão, abriu portas em 1931 e fechou ao público em 1987.
