Apparently this place is historic; this restaurant has been making Cantonese style noodles for generations. These noodles are thin, fragile-like, but they hold their shape and texture well when cooked to perfection.
We ordered their specialty, the saucer noodles with shrimp roe, on top of the regular wonton noodles soup. The shrimp roe had strong shrimp taste, so make sure you mix well. Chase every bite with the shrimp-based broth. The wontons in their soup were great, juicy on the inside. We also got the fried wontons, which were so light and fragile in your hands, but complimented well with the sauce that came with them. The fried fish balls were an acquired taste, as they came with very salty clam-based dipping sauce, but I came to like it after a few bites.
Mind you, the place was SMALL. If you're used to spacious dining rooms, this experience will be very different. You may even find yourself sharing a larger table with other families. And also, cash only, though they would take HK Dollars if you are short on local currency. But if you're in Macau and looking for local eateries near the ruins of St Paul, this is a...
Read moreI had the chance to try this restaurant recently, and overall, I had a mixed experience. The highlight of the meal was definitely the congee – it was absolutely delicious. The texture was silky smooth, with a wonderfully fragrant aroma. The pork in the congee was tender and well-seasoned, with a lovely hint of sesame oil that added depth and richness to every bite. It's one of the best congee dishes I've had in a long time.
The atmosphere of the restaurant was also quite pleasant. It has a relaxed, cozy vibe that makes it a great spot to enjoy a calm breakfast or brunch. I especially appreciated the tea that was served alongside the congee – it paired beautifully and elevated the overall experience.
However, one thing that disappointed me was the use of the same elevator for both clean food and dirty dishes. Seeing dirty plates being transported in the same lift used for fresh food made me feel uneasy and was not what I expected from a restaurant of this standard.
Lastly, I felt that the prices were slightly on the high side, especially considering this issue. With a few improvements, this place could easily...
Read moreThe Wong Chi Kei shop located on Senado Square was setup to take advantage of the heavy foot traffic and volume of tourists that visit the popular area of the historic city centre. We made a quick stop here recently for breakfast, finding their wonton w/ noodles and beef noodle soup dishes to be ok, nothing special but nothing bad either (rating 3 of 5).
Morning dishes are relatively cheap, service is direct, fast and you can be on your way to some sightseeing in the area in no more than 25-30 minutes. After 11.30am in the morning, they begin serving a much wider range of noodle, rice and other local dishes.
Queues can be long during the day with visitors eager to try this long standing restaurant in Macau. If interested in trying the original Macau based Wong Chi Kei, this one is located on Rua de Cinco road and has been serving up their famous noodle based dishes...
