Every year, I take a short break in Macau, usually staying at Hotel 16 because of its convenient location, clean rooms, and excellent facilities and services. However, this year, I chose the New Central Hotel. Although it is a historic hotel, it reopened in 2024 after renovations, and I was curious about what it would be like. Despite being rated as a two-star hotel in Macau, the online photos showed rooms with a vintage style, which intrigued me, so I decided to stay there this year.
When I arrived at the hotel, the staff's attire was very classic, and the elevator in the lobby had a distinct 60s and 70s style. As I went up to the fourth floor to check in, I noticed many vintage decorations in the lobby, which felt very fresh and unique.
Despite its two-star rating, I found the staff to be of high quality. Whether at the front desk, restaurant, luggage service, or housekeeping, everyone was professional and patient. As someone in the industry, I can honestly say the service felt more like a four-star hotel.
The rooms are divided by different eras, and my room was designed in the 1920s Old Shanghai style. The room was fully equipped with everything you could need, and more. There was a beautiful retro kettle, four exquisite crystal glasses, and stylish coffee cups. The most special touch was the complimentary mini-bar, which included two almond cookies, two packs of nuts, and even a hand-crank coffee grinder with a bag of coffee beans for making hand-brewed coffee. These details were full of pleasant surprises.
My wife and I also tried the hotel's breakfast and dinner.
Breakfast: We each ordered a Western-style and a Chinese-style breakfast. The Western breakfast was quite rich, including a hamburger, hash browns, sausages, bacon, and more. I skipped some items, but it was definitely filling. The Chinese breakfast was equally complete. Since we were guests, we got a discounted price of around 200 MOP per person, which was very reasonable.
Dinner: The service during dinner was exceptional. We ordered the hotel's signature set menu, priced at 588 MOP per person plus a 10% service charge, totaling around 1,400 MOP. While it may seem expensive, the service and experience far exceeded the cost. Each dish was served with detailed explanations from the staff about its origin, preparation, and how to enjoy it. It was a truly wonderful experience.
If you visit Macau, I highly recommend staying at this hotel. However, it’s worth noting that the hotel does not have a gym, swimming pool, or other entertainment facilities. It’s purely a convenient and comfortable base for...
Read moreI have stayed at many hotels traveling around the world including the US, Europe, and Asia. I also don't typically write reviews. However, my stay at Hotel Central Macao was so outstanding that I had to write a review. This is my favorite hotel in my over 30 years of travel. The hotel has been remodeled to restore the historic landmark. It is an absolute beauty! Everything has been meticulously designed and prepared to ensure the guests not only experience the highest quality and comfort, but receive a glimpse of the beauty of the history. The service is also outstanding. I had dinner at the restaurant one night and it was one of the best meals I have had including the taste, freshness, and presentation. In terms of location, it is the most centrally located hotel in Macao. The hotel is on the main street and is within walking distance to the main attractions including the St Paul Ruin, City Hall Fountain, Old Town, etc. You can also walk to the Lisboa Hotel, Wynn, Yaohan, or you could take the bus. As to the price, it is very reasonably priced for such a high end hotel. On the roof top, you can see the view of the entire Macao from all four corners of the hotel building. You can order drinks and snacks there at night. I watched the documentary of the hotel's remodeling process and I had such a deep appreciation for the history of Macao. It is true that you can have the most luxurious and beautiful hotels anywhere, but you could not replicate history. History and the love for that history was what made this hotel so special and unique. I will be staying here every time I come visit and I hope everyone will come stay here to experience the authentic and rich...
Read moreAdvantages:1) Historical hotel right in the center of everywhere, beautiful decos and lots of antiques and history gallery to take pictures.2) free mini bar with lots of drinks and snacks (so far the most generous one within the same price range) and free breakfast set (impressive)3) beautiful roof top bar, nice to visit during night to see the 360 degree view of Macau.Things to be improved:1) the attitude of the roof top bar staff. We visited the bar the night we checked in with free drink vouchers, the staff told us most of the areas were occupied ? (包场?) by some unknown people who dressed up and paid photographers to take boring show off internet photos for them, so the whole time when we were at the bar were chased here and there by those people because they need to POSE in front of certain places, they occupied most of the tables with their laptops and photo shoot gadgets, difficult to enjoy our own time although we were hotel guest too, in the end we could only stand at one corner to finish our drinks (don’t even think those people were hotel guests and paid extra to close down the whole area?), so disappointed that a hotel bar cannot treat its own guest the right way.The exchange of the drinks also kind of not so friendly because the drinks were free? We were told to collect the drink ourselves a while later at the counter and after drinking we returned the cups ourselves, during the process there is no waiter/ waitress cared about us at all.2) Room is rather small, fortunately we just visited for 2 nights with a simple backpack, if with a big luggage, can imaging will have difficulties to open up.3) check in process was quite slow...
