We last stayed a few nights at Royal Macau Hotel during the Chinese New Year (CNY) holiday and very much enjoyed our stay as we have been with our stays here in past years. In total, I believe we have stayed here 6-7 times during weekends trips from HK.
Rooms are very nice for the rates charged (see pictures) and represent a significant upgrade in value for money compared to similarly priced hotels in Macau. Importantly, beds are very comfortable and wifi is now always fast and stable. Refer to my past reviews for Royal Macau for room details and specifics. Check-in remains slower than most hotels around Macau but we've usually been able to get into our room within 10-15 minutes after arriving.
Transportation: There is free ferry service to/from the main Macau Ferry Terminal. Service hours 8.35am to 9.35pm from the hotel to the ferry terminal with scheduled departures every every 30 minutes (05 and 35 minute marks). From the ferry terminal, service runs from 8.55am to 9.55pm with service every 30 minutes (25 and 55 minute marks).
Note: There is convenient bus routes that you can pick up near Royal Macau as well. Walk through the small garden in front of the hotel. There is a bus stop to your right. There you can pick up buses to Taipa Village, Cotai Strip and Coloane if helpful.
Location: Royal Macau is situated on a quiet square, around 8-10 minute walk from the main sightseeing areas of the Historic Centre of Macau and just 3-4 minutes walk from the lovely St. Lazarus and Tap Seac areas. You can also walk up to Guia Hill in 8-10 minutes of rather steep climb from the hotel. In the end, there is easily 2 days worth or sightseeing nearby Royal Macau even before you consider trips over to the famous Cotai Strip to see the major hotels.
Dining: There are many local eateries around and the in-house FADO restaurant is one of our very favourite Portuguese restaurants in Macau. This makes for at least one delicious and convenient meal each time we stay at Royal Macau. We also usually stop by the very good coffee shops like Blooom and Single Origin which are within short walking distance from the hotel.
Overall, as long as room rates remain reasonable at Royal Macau, this will be one of our preferred hotels for our regular trips over from Hong Kong. It will also remain an easy property to recommend to fellow travellers visiting...

Read moreWhen you stay at the Royal makes sure that you include a Saturday or Sunday, then indulge yourself on the Brunch for only 108 MOP, it is a steal! Great selections of food and if you have a sweet tooth, then make time to sample their deserts . One word of warning, management likes keeping the hotel at refrigerator temperature so take something to keep you warm just in case you need it. In general, the hotel is a little old but their prices are so reasonable that you overlook its age. Do not believe the hype that it has a great location, the reality is that the location is so-so. You will need a taxi to go anywhere. great location allows walking to a lot of places, the Royal is just far enough that you better get a taxi. If you need any acupunture, lucky you! The Royal is only 10 minute walk from one of the best acupunture centers, Centro Medico Wa Hong, that I have ever visited. Ask for Dr. Chan, she is the best! The GOAT!The Royal has a Portuguese restaurant but if you want grilled bacalhau (cod fish) then do not believe the waiter when he says that they have it. The have shredded bacalhau which is not the same as the traditional piece of bacalao grilled and served with potatoes and a vegetable. If this is what you want, then take a taxi to the plaza and look for the restaurant with a pig outside. The people working are outstanding, professional but friendly. Most of them have been there for years. They are a happy team that makes you feel warm and want to also smile along with them. Again, for the price, the Hotel Royal is a very...
