We unfortunately visited (10/24) when there were multiple cruise ships in the harbor, each with thousands of people queuing up to ride the tram to the top to be amoungst the white buildings with blue domes. Bigtime bottle neck. We did hook up with a guy offering a boat ride to Oia, then a free bus ride to Fira. Unfortunately, we were not long in Fira before we ran into a very intimidating line that it turned out was for the tram ride back down to the harbor and the cruise ships. The line was so long, no one at the end had any idea just long it was. We spent over 3 hours waiting in that line for the ride back down. Fria is beautiful, but way over saturated with tourists all trying to pass thru the same overwhelmed...
Read moreI thought this really added to the experience of visiting Santorini. We had 3 kids and really loved it, was quite an exhilarating trip up the cliff and was a real highlight of a day with many highlights.
We were there on a day with two large cruise ships and ours was an hour late arriving. The lineup was not that bad, probably a 20min wait which is quicker than walking up the hill.
We did walk down the hill on the way home and it was a challenge. The donkey droppings make the walk very slippery and this was at the end of the day, not sure what it would have been like trying to walk up it.
I was very happy with our decisions to take the cable car up...
Read moreThe Santorini Cable Car that takes you up and down the rock face in Fira was a wonderful way for us to end the day, we were exhausted after a full day out on the island and I must admit that with all the crowds we walked passed the entrance to the cable car twice, also because it was the afternoon and everyone was heading back to their cruise ships the line to get a ticket was fairly long but all the shops still had items for sale within arms reach and the line moved pretty quickly, it all seemed very organised and in no time at all we were sitting in our cable car ready to take some last minute videos on the way...
