Capri Funicular (Grand Marina station) — Local services in Capri

This is one of those things that, honestly, you can only rate with either five stars or one — it’s either good or it isn’t. Let’s be fair: the funicular is old, everyone knows that before getting on, so that’s not something to complain about. The view is beautiful, but that’s thanks to Capri itself, not the train. What really matters here is the service, and unfortunately, that’s where things went wrong — from start to finish.

At the bottom station, there was a man supposedly there to help, but he gave no useful information at all. We asked if we should wait for the train, and he said “yes, five minutes.” Five minutes later, the train left without us. When we asked, he simply said, “Yes, another one in ten minutes,” with no explanation, all without even looking once up from his phone. Maybe there was a reason, but we never got one. It all felt very careless and confusing.

When we finally arrived at the top, we got out right away — we weren’t slow at all — but one of the female staff members started shouting “Come on, come on, move!” in a really rude tone. I didn’t make a big deal out of it, but apparently, she even pushed my friend on the back to make her move faster. My friend ignored it, trying to stay calm, but then the woman mocked her, imitating how she was talking and laughing in a childish way.

It was shockingly immature and incredibly rude. You’d expect better behavior from someone in her late thirties or forties, but apparently not.

And honestly, this has been the recurring theme of our trip — rudeness almost everywhere. Maybe it’s a cultural difference, I don’t know. But for fellow Europeans visiting Capri, it’s good to know that what they consider “normal friendliness” may feel quite rude by other standards.

As I said in my first review from Naples: I’ve never met so many unfriendly people in one place. Of course, there were exceptions, and I’ve mentioned those too — but overall, the contrast was hard to ignore.

Capri is not a cheap destination, so naturally you expect a certain level of professionalism and warmth. Sadly, this trip — including the funicular experience — was a complete disappointment.

Honestly if the people were just decent, it would have been a 5 star rating.

If you are coming off a water ferry entering Capri. I would highly recommend you grab a lemon sorbet and head to the white building in the middle of the port labeled Finacular.

This will take you directly to the top of the town where the main strip of Capri is located and you can use your phone or Credit Card’s tap to pay option directly on the entry device the pay for one ticket.

Be sure to to purchase an individual ticket for everyone in your party (card holder or phone user go last and pay for everyone’s ticket in front of you) as to not cause any delay.

Access first come first serve so if you have a larger group, you’re gonna want to be sure you have enough space as it gets crowded quick.

Revue of Capri as a whole. I presume you have seen Rick Steves 20 year old video. I love RS, but it is now 2023. Prices are high but the views are incredible. If you are an uptight traveler who wants service like you have “at home”, this is not the place. If you want to experience a place where the Italians go to “get away”, then come!

The food is good, but the views of the sea is why you are here. If you like history and architecture, then this too is the place to come!

I recommend this to anyone who wants to experience Italian relaxation… as they have done for 100s if not...
