We were on the quest for good chocolate and drove all the way to Modica in the pouring rain for Amtica Dolceria for its name. The store is small with a large tour group inside as we arrived. Their staff are professional and friendly manner but don't speak much of English, except the guide who's given the tour group the introduction. We tried some sample and brought many as gifts to bring back to our home country. The chocolates here are pricer than many equally good makers in this town but we have decided to do a one stop purchase. The saleswoman introduced us to their packaged cocoa powder as we were paying and asked if we wanted sample. Four of us accepted one cup of sample and each purchased a bag for about €8.5 and then women charged me an extra €2 for the sample cup. I personally were not happy about that as they offered us in the first place and together we purchased over €200. Overall, the chocolates aren't bad but I am not extra impressed either. The company has a long history and reputation but that's...
Read moreThe first chocoloatier of Modica having a legendary status among all other chocolatiers, with over 150 years of chocolate making tradition. The chocolate produced here doesn't contain milk, so it closely resembles chocolate made by the ancient Aztecs. We were in luck, as when we arrived there were no other visitors so we went immediately for the tasting session. The various flavours and composition of the individual chocolate samples were explained to us in detail. The tasting indeed reminded us of chocolates we tasted in Villahermosa in Mexico, which were made by a similar traditional process. Afterwards, the shop got quite full so we opted to take our delicious cannolli and cold chocolate outside on the bench, which was very enjoyable. Overall, our experience was very positive, you don't feel pushed to buy as much as possible (unlike in the case of one other local chocolatier). The place is very stylish and the atmosphere friendly, while the prices are still...
Read moreStopped here on a long drive from Trapani to Siracusa. Cute location in an alley, we arrived at 15.00 on a Wednesday, and there were two small lines of maybe 10 people total.
Found the QR code to scan the menu while we waited in line so we knew what we wanted to order by the time we got to the counter.
Not sure why people are saying it's so expensive? Most of their chocolate bars are between €2,50-€3. The shop across the street was €2 (least expensive we found) and others down the street were €4, so can't say I agree that it's expensive.
The chocolate cannoli was delicious, as was the cold chocolate drink! Pastries and cookies looked amazing, and many people were ordering deconstructed cannolis?! Shells and filling were packaged separately to make at home! So cool.
We didn't have enough time to purchase the tour, wish we could've! I do think reservation in advance...
