We arrived and took our seats. I went inside and, as I always do, asked them to recommend a glass of local red wine — their choice, whatever they thought would suit us best. A few minutes later, the same waiter I had spoken to brought the wine but didn’t explain anything about it — not what kind of wine it was, not the region it came from, nothing. It could have been any wine at all.

Then I noticed that the glass was dirty on the outside, and I pointed it out to the waiter and the owner. The owner came out and basically implied that it was my fault. They kept saying, “The glass was washed like the others, the bottle was just opened,” as if to suggest that I was mistaken.
