Classes: the classes are great, the teachers are fantastic, they are really engaging and the class sizes are small so less chance to get left behind.

Accomodation: The accomodation was very clean but it was down near the beach which meant walking 204 steps (11 floors) straight up the cliff at least twice a day. I was exhausted by the end of the week and it meant arriving at class in the morning already tired and sweaty. The school didn’t give me a heads up about the steps either and made no apology for the situation “That’s just part of staying in Tropea”, but in my opinion an 11 floor climb should be disclosed at the time of booking. Also wifi was out for 2 days, no microwave, oven tripped the power and the bathroom smelt of sewage. Price was expensive for southern Italy and my apartment was the same price as those in the centre of town. Organise your own accomodation so you know what you are getting.

Administration: This area also lets down the school. I missed my first class because the school didn’t provide my class information clearly, it was just told to me in the noisey foyer (in Italian not English and not in writing). I was told it was my fault because I should have been able to understand the italian instructions. The school gave me an extra class to make up the one I missed but acted like they were doing me a huge favour by doing so. Any problems were never the schools fault and I found the lack of empathy upsetting. Also only one person speaks English so everything is communicated in Italian, if you are a beginner this will be very difficult.

Social Activities: I think this school is more social activities than other schools, it also helps that Tropea is a small town so you end up seeing other students when you are out and about. But once again, some info on the activities in English would be really helpful, I felt like I was always having to work hard to understand what I was signing up for and I had to ask other students who understood more Italian than I did.

Overall, I enjoyed Tropea, learned a lot from the classes and loved having a group of students to hang with but the problems left me feeling stressed most of the week. lessons are engaging, useful and well prepared friendly and welcoming atmosphere the teachers have an exceptionally broad experience and a considerable specialist knowledge. I deeply admired the high degree of commitment and motivation the school in Trieste is overall highly organized & very customer-oriented. The receptionists speak a lot of different languages. the school offers: apartments, transfers, excursions and various course types (group classes, private lessons, online classes etc.). Possible to prepare and take official exams (CELI, CILS) Trieste is a safe city, has a interesting history & many sightseeing opportunities as well as a fantastic bus system (App: Tpl Fvg). Also great train connections to visit other places like Venice, Palmanova, Udine etc. (App: Trenitalia) to be kept in mind: majority of the students are from german-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland). Mi sono iscritta al corso B di 3 settimane. Il corso B include quattro ore al giorno, cinque giorni alla settimana: due ore di grammatica e due ore di conversazione. Le lezioni iniziano da scrivere un test, che verifica la nostra conoscenza linguistica. Dopo aver scritto il test c’è stata anche una prova orale, cioè un discorso in italiano con una delle insegnanti. Abbiamo parlato sui vari temi: di dove siamo, cosa facciamo nella vita, quali sono i nostri interessi, perché studiamo l’italiano, che cosa avevamo già imparato prima e abbiamo discusso del test. Dopo tutto questo gli insegnanti ci raggruppano in piccoli classi. Si basano sui livelli A1, A2, B1 ecc, ma sono molto flessibili. Durante la prima settimana sono stata sola, che è stato stupendo all'inizio per abituarmi alla scuola e agli insegnanti. Poi sono stata nel gruppo di 3 persone. Durante il mio soggiorno a scuola in nessun gruppo non ci sono state più di tre persone. Il personale è giovane, sorridente è aperto. Le lezioni grammaticali si basano sul libro Progetto Italiano, che ci regala la scuola. Tuttavia l’abbiamo usato poco, ci è servito piuttosto per i compiti di casa. Gli esercizi grammaticali sono stati inventati dall’insegnante - tutti molto utili, usati nella vita quotidiana. Tutto ci è stato spiegato in italiano: dalla grammatica al significato delle singole parole. Siccome avevo paura di non capire qualcosa, per le prime due lezioni ho preso il dizionario con me, ma non mi è servito affatto. Tutto il personale parla anche l’inglese, quindi si poteva usare la parola l’inglese, ma la risposta era sempre in italiano. Le lezioni di conversazione sono state basate sui giochi, sulla discussione sui vari argomenti e articoli, i testi autentici presi dai giornali, ascolto dei podcast. Tutto questo è stato molto interessante. Alla scuola frequentano le persone da tutto il mondo, ma soprattutto le donne. Durante il mio soggiorno ci sono state le donne dal Giappone, Belgio, dalla Libia, Ucraina, Moldavia, Germania ma anche le persone, che vivono in Italia. La scuola ha un ricco programma culturale: guardare i film italiani insieme, le gite con la guida turistica nei dintorni, gli spettacoli al teatro, all’opera ecc. Alcune cose sono incluse nel prezzo del corso e altre sono extra pagate. Tutto vale il suo prezzo. Quello che mi è piaciuto di più è l’atmosfera. Le persone, che studiano a scuola, si incontrano anche dopo le lezioni per bere un caffè o mangiare qualcosa a volte con le insegnanti. Inoltre io come una persona timida con le nuove persone, con un enorme ostacolo nel parlare in italiano, mi ci sono trovata benissimo. Il personale sorridente incoraggiava a parlare correggendo gli errori discretamente così’ che non ti blocchi continuare a parlare. Ci aiutavamo a vicenda. Ho chiamato questo istituto „scuola magica”, perché il mio ostacolo nel parlare è passato in 15 minuti della lezione e dopo qualche giorno anche con i veri italiani con i quali non avevo detto per un anno nemmeno una parola in italiano.
