Curegarden Open Air Bath — Local services in Gero

Three flights of stairs down and upon entering, the lady at the counter was very warm and friendly, she spoke very comprehensive English and added hand gestures for everything else in between. Entering the Gero spring bath, it's another flight of stairs down into the bath, naked. And then, what a pleasant experience. As I visited during summer, the cicadas were beaming away next to me as I soaked, and watched the birds flying in uniform in the mountain sky from across the river, as leaves drop gingerly in the wind. I will never forget this wonderful experience. And don't forget to have the Hida milk after a good soak! The Hida milk itself is amazing!

Standard Temperature of Onsen water is 41 degree celcius. There were round tub ones that had hot, moderate and cold water. The moderate one was really good as a start and once you get used to the 41 degree celcius water it was perfect even in summer. The lady at the onsen was friendly. There's a rest area upstairs if you're waiting for your friend to come out. There's also a clock in the onsen which was good unlike most onsens you'll have to guess how long you've been in there. You'll have to bring your own towel (both big / small). The hotel you stay in may recommend like ours and give you a discount voucher and tell you to bring your towels. A lovely onsen in a nice spot from which you can see the mountains and Riverside or Gero. In spring there are sakura and in autumn roses.

Visit on a weekday evening to have the place to yourself!! I had it entirely to myself from about 5pm-7pm on a Friday as a casual visitor, using the Gero Onsen multiple pass from the visitor centre.

There are a few moderately hot donburi style baths, a big central bath that ranges from about 45-48 degrees, and a cool little foot pool with a shower-like stream of water that falls on your head. Spa sections and still sections are available. Soap and shampoo are provided but...
