Komatsu Ryokan is about 750 m (9 min) walk from the Ueno JR Station, 400m (6 min) from Shin-Okachimachi Oedo Line Station, and 260m (3 min) from the Inaricho Ginza Line Station. This location is not bad for public transportation, and is also within a few minutes walk to the bustling Ameyoko market. It might be a bit hard to find because it is not situated on the main road, even our cab took sometime to find it, so it's better if you print a location map if you are walking from a train station.||||The ryokan is more like a hostel, not a traditional Japanese ryokan, but at least you got to sleep on tatami. The place is very new, all the toilets and bathroom are in perfect condition. The downside is that the space is a bit small and cramped, and there is only one bathroom to be shared among the 5 or 6 rooms. The place is also very near to a 7-11, Family Mart, and a Sukiya rice chain. The walk back the ryokan at night might be a little dark and quiet but there don't seem to have any danger as we see it. Strong wifi can also be accessed from our room upstairs. And, like what the first reviewer stated, we all like the staircase-very beautifully designed (I wish to have it in my own house!)||||The owner is a very friendly guy, and is always very helpful (but then again, my experience with all Japanese service personnel is mostly pleasant.) ||||Compared to a proper hotel, this place might loose out in luxuries like attached bathroom, TV, proper bed, etc. I'd say, if the price of ryokans like this is significantly lower than a hotel room on your list, then it is...
Read moreA wonderful place to stay within easy access to both Ueno and Asakusa areas, JR Yamanote and Shinkansen lines, as well as Tokyo and Toei metro stations.
Some things to note: The hotel has two floors, with a narrow stairway connecting them. For those with large luggage, this will be an issue. If anyone also has mobility issues or weak knees, the stairs will make staying here difficult. There is only one shower room on the ground floor, but both floors have toilets for both men and women (4 in total). There are two sinks with mirrors, on both floors, in the hallways. Walls are very thin, so there's not much soundproofing. But everyone understands this, and so the hotel is wonderfully quiet.
I stayed here with my partner for two nights, and for that length of stay this place is perfect. There is a communal kitchen with a toaster, microwave, and fridge. The rooms are quite small, but very cozy. You do have to make your futon yourself, but the quality of sleep makes the effort worth it, since they are extremely comfortable. Location is also fantastic, and the owner was very friendly and accommodating. Price and value for money are top of the line.
Absolutely recommend staying here for solo travelers and couples, definitely a great experience of staying in an authentic...
Read moreAll of the staff here were really helpful and spoke some English. Our room was clean, quaint, and traditional Japanese style with the tatami mats flooring and traditional house sandals for us to wear in our room. That was a nice touch. In other countries we might hope for a bigger room but inside Tokyo this was a pretty good bargain for the location. This ryokan is less than 10 minutes walk from Ueno station. Ueno area has so many museums, restaurants, and other stuff to see. We'll definitely stay here again when we visit Tokyo next time. It was a bit hard to book a room. As there are few rooms it seems like they stay pretty booked up so it might be a good idea to check well beforehand.||In addition it has nearby 24 hour convenience stores, places to eat within close walking distance, free wi-fi that was fast enough to watch streaming video in our room.||We also enjoyed sitting in the small loft in the public area, it was a nice place to enjoy our morning coffee (see photos).||All around this was a pretty good place. We enjoyed our stay and it...
