If you are looking for Japanese glass brands, Masunaga is certainly a brand you will likely see come up in online discussions. In the USA, there's stockist but they often have very limited supply of these frames and often its hard to find the more popular or intricate frames. During my trip, I figured why not see the full range of their collection and what they have to offer?

The shop is a 3 story building. I believe the 3rd floor is more for eye exam or consultation (I can't really tell but it looked like a waiting room). This leaves the first and second floor. The first floor is mostly acetate frames and sunglasses. I didn't spend too much time there as I already had some sunglasses I really liked and didn't need another and I prefer metal frames over acetate. So, off to the second floor I went. During my initial visit, a lot of the staff were busy helping another guess with what looked like a pickup. I had some time to myself to explore the 2nd floor to myself before an associate noticed me. I tried out a few of their glasses like the Begonia, Bleecker, and Madison. When the staff found me, he pulled out a tray and asked me what style I was interested in (e.g. square frames, rectangle, etc.) and picked a few he thought would suit my taste given what I was currently wearing. After the first initial round of 3 frames, he asked me what I liked and didn't like about them and revised his next batch of 3 frames. I mentioned something along the lines of "if I was going to pay a premium, I would like to see more craftmanship to be visible on the glass". I guess this phrase caught his ear which then came a batch of 3 K3 collab frames. This reminded me of a frame I was interested in seeing in person but couldn't think of the name so I had to pull up their website to find that it was the Rindo.

After pulling out the Rindo in one colorway, I mentioned I liked it but found the bronze/gold trim drew too much attention and was wondering if there was something more subtle before showing me some black on black and black on silver variation.

I settled on the black on black rindo and got my prescriptions read from my current glasses. They offer 3 brands of lenses of which I don't remember one of them. But its between Zeiss and Nikon. They had a table where they showed Nikon as more superior for some reason but up to you to favor what you want. All I wanted was durable, smudge coating, and blue light filtering. With that said, they got my email, sent a test message (probably because I had a weird domain), and told me that it should be ready within 7-10 days but to expect an email.

They do offer to ship to your hotel or accommodations but prefer to pick it up in person and have adjustments made.

TRULY AMAZING EXPERIENCE! I’ve been here today with my girlfriend for a new pair of Masunaga glasses. Since i’m already a client (but in ITALY, my hometown) i was ready to experience the classic situation where you’re left alone cruisin’ through the glasses with no help from the salesmen… and i was totally wrong. As for everything in Japan, they put in passion, class and LOVE in what they’re doing. I was well advised and helped in the choice, but without ever feeling oppressed. The male sales assistant is very friendly. Even though his English is not perfect. He tried to use the google translater on iPad to help communication. Very patient staff, willing to help me and answer all my questions and solved all my concern. The male staff is on the customer side and cares about customers. Instead of selling you unnecessary expensive lenses, he tried to sell you the lenses fits your daily need. He was very patient in the eye examination and lense test to figure out the best option for my eyes. I really love the service here.
