Tokyo Academics helped me when I struggled to grasp certain concepts in mathematics. When my mother had signed me up for a tutoring session, I had significant apprehension about touching the subject because of my performance anxiety. I've had a lengthy history of harmful confrontations with math teachers who instilled in me the belief that I had limited intelligence that was bound to me inherently.
I feared that an academic institution would look at my level of performance and condescend to me. However, my experience at TA was quite the opposite of what I had feared. In an anxious effort, I gave my math tutor a sloppy reiteration of my practiced speech, explaining my math inadequacy. The response I had expected was, "Oh, that's why you're an idiot, mhmm..." There was no such answer. Instead of belittling me, my excellent tutor, Varun, dispelled the notion that my struggles were an innate disadvantage rather than a lack of belief in my abilities. He had the sensitivity to approach my shattered confidence by reviewing with me about pacing if I required another explanation and if I felt comfortable with the material. From then on, I reached a mathematical proficiency that I formerly thought impossible for "someone like me." Every accomplished question gave me a pep in my step. Instead of tapping my pencil and staring blankly at the question, I sped ahead with determination. My family members noticed the change in my demeanor when I came home from a day at TA. I would arrive back home with a sparkle in my eye and complete my workload with the skip of my pencil.
Varun and the additional staff at TA continued to foster my newfound motivation by supporting me and guiding me toward new challenges and opportunities. Academic completion is one thing, but the enthusiasm and passion I gained during my time there are another. While TA maintains a professional atmosphere, I can't help but consider them a second family. If you are, or know of a young person who doesn't believe in themselves academically, I would highly...
Read moreI’m a student studying at an international high school in Japan. My school previously had no logistics for a large portion of student curriculum to be project based, as it was an IBDP based school. While I’d been working with an entrepreneurial mentor to try and make it my ideal PBL education work, we weren’t familiar with the education world and needed an expert. Luckily, we found Tokyo Academics.
Over a period of 6 weeks, TA tutor Dr. Jason Cody Douglass aided me in designing a personalised curriculum that enables me to pursue interdisciplinary project-based interests, while gaining support from the existing educational pedagogy at my high school. From my program’s daily curriculum, to assessment, to educational resources, to communicating with colleges, and SAT preparation, Jason helped me refine and boost all of my initial ideas for a project-based high school education. Most importantly, Jason was invested in my success, and put in more effort than I ever could’ve hoped for in an educator of his role. Proof of his advices merit is evident in positive responses I’ve received after sending emails to multiple top tier universities in the USA regarding my proposed high school curriculum.
I’m immensely grateful for Jason’s fruitful aid this year. I would highly recommend TA’s expertise and passion for teaching to anyone who’s applying to the colleges of their choice, or even designing their...
Read moreGoing into college counseling at TA, I was initially unsure of what I wanted to do in the future and where I wanted to go. Working with Tyler in the past 2 years has really helped me gain a better understanding of who I am as a learner and made me more confident in myself. I felt that he was able to understand me as a person and help me authentically communicate my values and beliefs in my applications. At any given time, I felt I was encouraged to express who I am without needing to appeal to others by saying things that did not align with my values. In the stressful months leading up to my application deadlines, Alisia helped me plan and edit draftsss of college essays. She even took time out of her weekends to meet with me and edit my essays, which I am so so grateful for. Without both of them, I would not have been admitted to the top-tier universities that I now have the privilege to choose from. Looking back, I am so thankful and happy to have had the opportunity to work with counselors who are so passionate about their work and supportive of their students. I felt they really cared about their students and the work they did which allowed me to trust them at all times and complete my application season smoothly. Thank you so so much Tyler and...
