Hiking Table Mountain is an unforgettable experience that combines natural beauty, physical challenge, and panoramic rewards. I recently completed the Platteklip Gorge route, the most direct and popular trail, and it was a strenuous yet deeply satisfying climb.

Starting just outside Cape Town, the trail winds steeply up the mountain’s face. It’s a well-maintained stone path, but don’t let that fool you—this hike is tough. The ascent is relentless, with a near-constant incline that demands a good level of fitness. Along the way, you’re surrounded by unique fynbos vegetation and may even spot dassies (rock hyraxes) scurrying among the rocks.

Despite the effort, the reward is beyond worth it. Reaching the summit feels like entering another world. The view stretches across the city, the Atlantic Ocean, Robben Island, and down the Cape Peninsula. The air is cool, the landscape otherworldly, and the iconic flat-topped summit provides plenty of space to rest and take in the sights. You can hike back down or take the cable car for a scenic descent.

Getting to Table Mountain is fairly easy. Getting parking at Table Mountain is another ball game entirely. You can park on the road leading up but it’s still a steep walk so your best bet is to skip your car and get a taxi here. Or you could park in the lower car park and catch the free shuttle bus up (bus takes like 5 minutes, if that to be honest).

Within a few short minutes (and several ear pops later), a revolving cable car whisks you right up to the top of the mountain, offering pretty great views as you slowly progress upwards.

If you look closer at the mountains, you can see people climbing the mountain. I have to admit, at the time, it looked like these people tried walking up it and lost their way and so decided to just carry on. At the top, you can of course go wandering around to get a fuller picture...
