My husband and I were on a cruise and we only had 8 hrs to spend in the Port City of Valencia. Johan, our guide and sommelier picked our group of 8 up at the terminal and whisked us off for a beautiful day in the Requina-Utiel wine region. Our first visit was to a historic winery with caves hidden underground that were used to make and store wines in large clay jars, hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Johan led us through the caves explaining the history and process of the wine making from years ago and we then enjoyed a beautiful tasting of several wines. We then went to our next stop, a family owned winery with acres of vineyards in a very picturesque setting. We toured through the winery with Johan explaining the processes and history. Our time ended with lunch and a table set for us under the trees, over looking the valley and vineyards towards Utiel. The view was amazing and the food and wine were absolutely delicious! This was an experience to remember. Thank you, Johan for not only sharing your knowledge of the wines and the region with us but for creating an experience that we will always remember. Our full day wine tour with Johan in February, 2025 was full of pleasant surprises, great wines and engaging conversations. The many pleasant surprises included scenic drives through the Utiel-Requena countryside west of Valencia; centuries old wine caves and town square in Requena old town that we would never have found on our own; encounters with caring winemakers clearly passionate about the region; a great selection of wines to taste; and a very tasty multi-course lunch in a beautiful, rustic setting that made us want to stay at the hotel during a future visit. We tasted a broad spectrum of wines and look forward to tasting our many purchases in our vacation rental in Valencia. And last, but most importantly, is Johan, the person who curated our spectacular day. He arranged the perfect day, comfortably chauffeured us through our well paced day (we are seniors). Sommelier, Johan clearly has the respect of the winemakers we visited and is highly knowledgeable about their wines and seemingly all Spanish wines. We had the best time on our wine tour with Johan – it was hands down the highlight of our trip. He took us to some really special places, including ancient wine caves in a charming little town and a beautiful, family-run vineyard. We got a proper education on local grapes and wine-making processes, but in a way that felt relaxed and enjoyable, never dry or scripted.

Johan is a fantastic guide – warm, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable. He made everyone feel at ease from the get-go. Also worth mentioning: he’s guilty of a heavy pour (no complaints here), but he still made sure we sampled a wide range of wines throughout the day.

If you're in Valencia and even remotely into wine, don’t miss this. We walked away with great memories, new knowledge, and maybe a slight buzz....
