Mary Anning — Local services in England

Lyme Regis never fails to astonish. We went enmasse, and trying to please all in the party for dietary requirements could have been a task, but Lyme Regis has a plethora of eateries to suit everyone. The kids (18) ate at the pub on the harbour. There is a glorious bakery up the hill by the pay and display carpark and a tesco for those in need of just protein. Carpark was empty-ish when we arrived at 11.30 am. Was full, with people queuing when we left at 2.30pm. Weather was glorious. We were lucky. Felt positively balmy! Always check the weather as it has its own micro-climate there. Parking reasonably priced. There is also a lower car park nearer the front for those who can not walk as far as the NCP beside Tesco. Lots of coffee/tea stops along the front. The harbour cobb is SLIPPERY! Be warned. Also, sandflies were highly abundant when we went in December. Wear a scarf as they'll infest your hair and ears closer to the Cobb. The Mary Anning Statue is placed well, overlooking the fossil pavements. She is glorious! Well worth a visit for budding palaeontologist! All round, a glorious visit. There are many dogs, remember to watch where you walk and always bring poo-bags. Great pet shop half way up the hill with lots of lovely gifts. The bookshop is particularly remarkable and worth a visit! So many...

Mary Anning was a British palaeontologist, fossil hunter and dealer of the early 19th century. Although she is now recognised for her discoveries and has a portrait hanging in the Natural History Museum in London, but like many women who achieved great things, she was largely unrecognised in her day, much like Rosalind Franklin. Like Franklin, she died of cancer at a tragically young age. The statue itself is at the north east end of Lyme Regis sea front and has Anning looking towards the Black Ven, the area of rock and beach where she did much of her work. The statue shows Anning in the company of her dog, holding a geological hammer in one hand and an ammonite in the other. Lyme Regis is a very nice seaside town, visitors should see the statue and recognise her importance to the town...
