I'd never been to Lyme Regis before, but we watched 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' the other night, and it's only an hour from home, so we thought we'd go.
Lyme Regis is a gorgeous seaside town. Much more salubrious than the usual seas-side towns full of amusement arcades and tat shops. Definitely worth a day trip, if not a few days there.
It was a windy, wet day and the water wash lashing against the cob - perfect. There was a little aquarium there too, so we went in and fed 'the mullets'.
'The Cob' is the breakwater that takes the worst of the storms to keep the harbour safe. The Mary Anning statue was lovely to see too ... such amazing dedication to her chosen career.
We also did some fossil hunting, and came away with a good haul of fossils. Woohoo !
We stopped at a little hole in the wall called The Whole Hog which had been recommended to us. OMG ! Amazing and delicious pulled pork baps. They cook it, cut it and serve it right in front of you. Gorgeous smell, funky place.
I would highly recommend you go here if you’re not looking for a proper...
Read moreThe food was absolutely amazing. I had the hog roast bap to start with, which I highly recommend, especially as it had bits of crackling in it. I'd have liked the roast chicken but they had run out by the time I went, part of me wanted to mark them down a little for this but really not willing to take away a whole star because they faced high demand in the summer. I also had a Nutella filled doughnut which was amazing. They fill their doughnuts fresh in the morning and have lots of delicious flavours. I wanted to go Nutella, the lady did inform me that she'd run out, I was just about to decide on a different filling when she kindly said she could do fill one for me. They keep some empty and fill them as and when people request fillings. Definitely a satisfied customer and recommend people try it if they go there on holiday. Sorry for the average score on atmosphere, the little take away window and shop was beautiful but when you're eating on the street the atmosphere is what you make of it, not really down...
Read moreWe travelled up on the bus from Weymouth (the joys of a bus pass!) specifically to buy a hog roast bun. 2 hours of rockin and rollin on a very hot day were well rewarded. As so many have mentioned before the buns are superb, the meat, the onions, and the sauces all excellent. Eating them can be a problem, gulls are a right P.I.T.A, but we found a sunny sport about 50feet away with a high stone wall protecting the seats (just by the big anchor). Another issue, which we will equip ourselves for the next time, is the need for a good old clean up after. Eating one is not elegant, all the lovely gooeyness squishes out over your fingers. I managed not to get any on my shirt! We were saved by a young lady with her son enjoying the sun. She provided us with 'wet wipes' ;-)
We will be back before too long, and get some doughnuts to take home. We did not eat anything else for the rest of the day.
Bravo to all...
