I was a member of Bannatyne for a year and never had any trouble using the gym, which offered everything I needed – though the classes were of varying quality. The reason for the poor rating, however, is the maddening process I had to go through to cancel my membership when I moved away from the area. Three days before moving, I went into the gym in person and closed down my membership. I was told it was all done and that once the 12 months I had signed up for had come to an end (ca 8 weeks later), I would no longer be charged. I was also told that I may qualify for early cancellation (i.e. before the end of my contract) if I could demonstrate that there would be no Bannatyne within a 15 mile radius of my new address. Over the next month or so, I called the office three times to enquire about this, but was always told to call back later as the person I would need to speak to wasn't in. In the end, I gave up and resigned myself to the idea that I would have to pay for the last two months. Imagine my surprise when I then discovered that Bannatyne had continued charging me past the end date of my contract! When I called to rectify this, I was told they didn't have a completed cancellation form on file, so the membership hadn't been cancelled. This was the first I heard of such a form, despite coming in to cancel in person and subsequently calling the office three times. As I've been trying to rectify this, Bannatyne has been neither clear nor forthcoming at all, and it has left me very frustrated. They have refused to refund the £44 they charged after the end of my contract. Can't believe the lack of...
Read morethis is the worst gym in the area. really bad bad attitude from the self proclaimed "manager" of the gym who is doing nothing and give answers like " i am the boss if you have some complaints you can leave" . and my conplain was "nobody is helping an old lady to read her workout card"
can you believe it? this is horrifying situtation. i don't feeel safe in that gym anymore myself.
you would expecting great attitude from someone who is dealing with public every day, skills to bring business to the gym. but no... no social skills, bad attitude like "i am the boss here". I am sure you can find better gyms . plenty of gyms in London. on top of this: the ceiling is so low I cannot use the stairmaster because i bang my head on the ceiling lol. after you complain nobody can assist. smart guys lol. Furthermore the machine to check your wrist band is always broken. usually there is bad smell in the gym. often the changing room is a lake because they clean it during rush hour. this is more expensive than other close gym just not worth it. i can forgive some malfunctioning but i cannot forgive bad attitude from people working there. no thanks cancelled my membership. I tried mot of the gyms in London. we are very far from Virgin and Third Space but well that is another league. Everyone is smiling and welcoming and just a good service. Here you get worst of service and average machines compared to Puregym they have better. and really bad attitude like you are entering a criminal hideout.manager saying to you "I am the boss here" lol not even in the movies. crazy congrats to the manager and who...
Read moreFirst of all, Bannatyne's Maida Vale is not really in Maida Vale, it's actually more in Kilburn, but that's just a little detail. I am now going there for about one and a half years and in general quite like it. The location is good just off Kilburn High Road with plenty of busses stopping just outside.
The gym is not large, but big enough for me. Some evenings are typically quite busy, but usually I always get to do whatever I want to do, so mostly there is no shortage of equipment.
Staff are usually friendly, but in recent months I also had a bad experience, when they tried hard to get me onto their direct debit scheme. After that discussion I extended my membership twice already and it never came up again, besides in their emails and letters. This one time I faced some staff I had never seen before and also never after. Perhaps it was a one-off experience, but this actually annoyed me quite a bit. Abandoning a normal scale and replacing it with some stupid weight and fat measuring machine that costs extra is similar to a rise in membership fees, if you used to use the scale from time to time. Another little thing that just shows that customer service is probably not always the first objective.
The facilities are clean, the people there are nice and friendly and after a tough workout you can swim in the little pool or just relax in the steam room or the sauna. If you are into courses, you will find a broad range of different offerings.
Some things could be improved and I am probably spoilt by my previous gym, but all in all, Bannatyne's Maida Vale is a...
