Excellent 20 mile flat and linear tarmaced trail along the Newry canal that stretches from Portadown to Newry. It's suitable for all ages and physical abilities. I started my walk at Scarva visitor centre, which has a cafe, carpark, toilets and bike hire company. The bike hire and cafe are presently closed due to covid restrictions. Scarva railway station is very close to the visitor centre, if you don't want to drive. Scarva is 8 miles along the towpath from Portadown and 12 miles along the towpath from Newry. I did a 3 mile return walk from Scarva to Acton lake (Lough Shark) that took about 1 hour. There are toilets and a picnic table at Acton lake visitor centre. The locals told me that the stretch of towpath between Scarva and Poyntzpass was perhaps the nicest part of the walk, but that the whole 20 miles was worth walking or cycling.

This is a great place for a quiet stroll. It stretches from Portadown right down through Tandragee, Scarva and Poyntzpass, to Newry, through lush countryside. Along the way, there are places to have coffee and something to eat, a few picnic spots, a Visitors' Centre - and lots of benches to rest! You can also cycle this path - in fact, this is my only gripe; there are too many serious cyclists using the path, particularly at weekends, whizzing by at breakneck speeds. Nonetheless, this path can be heaven on a sunny - or even a not-so-sunny day. Check it out soon!
