Finally!!!! an experienced & honest tailor. She’s now my forever tailor in Atl- im putting her on my holiday card list- seriously All the others, I swear, were coming up with prices not for the work, but billing a percentage off of the luxury brand SRP.
Im vertically challenged, petite, get lots of pr sample pieces, never pay retail & can’t sew a straight line (so a VERY Very regular customer). I used to work w big designers in ny - i can pin & I know what can & can’t be altered & where, whats tedious & what isn’t. I am fair & always respect the labor AND account for their overhead. But here in Atlanta- places were beyond unreasonable, trying to make it sound like it was extra complicated when ironing wasn’t even involved (missoni hem)- or like I mentioned - can’t give me a price until they look at the designer label first : i can see her brain recalling the most recent retail cost - and then she spits out a $ amount. (i have walked out in disgust bc it should be price?; ok - no lining, chiffon, straight hem= $x. Not: Balenciaga, 15% of the retail cost. So Kelly is my no 1 and only 1 in Atl now. she’s fair, fast, skilled & No off the hip get what you can or double teaming trying to convince you they can’t charge a penny less bc it’s so much work & making all kinds of demands if they don’t like how you want to change it (ladies it’s not 120 hrs of couture gold bullion hand embroidery, it’s not even 2 layers of chiffon all 1 length: it’s an unlined suit pant hem). Anyway she’ll be my tailor for as long as I’m in Atlanta. & if I leave I’ll still use her if she’ll let me just mail her clothes with the alteration marked- that’s how frequent & loyal I am - but also how terrible so many others are here.
I haven’t done sleeve hems with her yet (don’t known her feelings about buttons & holes & function optional) or any complex alterations but I don’t foresee any issue- i am considering adding more to the total cost of my Balmain leather pants- the knee seam is splitting - but I will respond if you inquire- I feel their worth the...
Read moreI had some challenges with my wedding dress alterations. Unfortunately, it ended up being shorter than I had anticipated due to the alterations, which were not executed as effectively as I had hoped. Although the alterations could be easily adjusted after the first fitting, I found that this was due to them not being done in the most secure manner. I had requested a loop inside the train to carry instead of the bustle, but that wasn't implemented, based on seamstress suggestion. The lace detail on the dress has made it even more delicate, and I feel that a better approach would have been to leave it unaltered, as I could have managed the slightly loose shoulders.
I visited for alterations twice, and while the first experience went smoothly, this time it was a bit disheartening. I encourage others to be mindful of their requests and to discuss how alterations will be executed to avoid these issues.
Photos are of the dress after the new fold over seem was taken out....
Read moreMy son went in and had his pants altered. They had them ready the next day. One of the pair of pants did not look the way he wanted, so he asked the woman if she could fix them. She wanted to charge him an additional $20 to fix the pants. She says he asked her for a hem only. He say that he wanted the pants shortened and tapered/tight at the leg. As an alterations professional you should have been able to tell him that once they are shortened they would widen and therefore need tapering. They are already EXTREMELY expensive, and I would have liked if she would have been a little more understanding that she did not do what he asked with the pants. I explained that I have never had anything altered and it wasn't fixed it if wasn't done to my liking. I could possibly understand a small fee to fix them but $20?? That's a bit much when he told you he wanted both pants to look the same. Won't be...
