Eltrym Theater — Local services in Baker City

I specifically drove all the way from Portland to this theater to see for myself their new "robotic AI" experience and was more than impressed.

The two "people" at the front counter took our tickets just like a real human would, and honestly if I didn't know they were fake before coming in I probably couldn't tell the difference.

It's VERY strange to me that Meta would roll out this new technology in (of all places!) Baker City Oregon, but I'm glad their "soft opening" is within a day's drive because AI technology has always fascinated me since my childhood parakeet was unfortunately eaten by the disk drive of a Commodore 64.

The theater itself was clean and the seats were comfortable. And watching a movie in an historic theater built in 1940 adds a layer of pomp to the experience that can't be sufficiently described in a review.

I felt a little bit disconcerted when the robotic AI theater manager came out from behind the counter after the show and took our picture in front of the movie poster. She seemed so friendly and life-like. It made me worried that perhaps AI has gone too far and maybe within 5-10 years we will all be living in a post-apocalyptic hellscape where our only currency is a knowing smile and a wink that says. Pretty good little theater. Stadium seating, decent projection, and good-enough surround sound. The theater felt pretty out-dated (not really in a charming way), and the sound insulation was terrible, I could hear every bit of the movie I was watching when I walked all the way to the bathroom, and when I was sitting in the theater watching my movie, at the quiet parts, I could hear the soda machine hissing at the con session stand, and the projector fans were very loud. I have so many memories from this place it is hard to be objective. I can say this: I have been to a lot of theaters all over the US from theaters in Nebraska, Connecticut, New York, California, Washington, Idaho, and more... The Eltrym continues to be the best small theater I have ever been to. Terry is determined to provide her customers with a quality option, even though the Eltrym is the only option less than a 40 minute drive away. I am even going with my giant...
