On our first visit over Spring break, my wife and I decided we would give them 100 stars if we could. This past week we were on a summer vacation and again opted to spend the night in Baker City so that we would visit Sweet Wife for breakfast before heading out of town. They are truly awesome and gifted in their craft-- and we love the new location! We'd give them another hundred stars.
Sweet Wife is an absolute gem and was a totally unexpected find as we passed through town over spring break. This time around, they had only been open 3 days in the new location and they're doing great. What made this visit more exciting was that A) they had been so busy with opening the new location that they had not yet listed on the web that they were back open. My wife and I were initially sad to see that they were not yet open but refused to leave town without at least doing a drive-by to see if the website was incorrect. Thankfully, they had a line out the door and I had to drop my wife off to wait in line while I circled to find parking. B) It was so neat to see that not only was their business enduring these difficult times for small business in general and especially local food service operations, but they appear to be thriving! Awesome and friendly service, incredible baked goods, delicious lattes, and an exemplary small business.
They would give any big city neighborhood coffee shop or bakery serious competition and would probably win, but we're glad they're in Eastern Oregon because it gives us something wonderful to look forward to when we're in the area. They have earned their way into our regular must-stops and I'm glad to say we've stopped in for breakfast on two consecutive road trips from Portland now.
They make excellent coffee and divine baked goods. We still love the cardamom knot. The coffee drinks are wonderful.
Sweet Wife is an excellent example of small-business and community done well, especially given the current state of business and food/service industry-chaos resulting from the pandemic-- which they continue to handle reasonably and responsibly.
We look forward to...
Read moreOver $31 for a “special” sandwich and 2 iced tea. Not worth the trip off the highway. This was supposed to be a great place to get a meal and recommended by a friend. We waited more than 35 minutes for sandwich specials when there were no other customers. The first time we asked about our lunch it was after waiting 20 minutes or so. The server went back and pointed at the hanging ticket and the kitchen staff just looked at each other and yet no one made it. The second time we asked about our meal it was after waiting another 10 minutes we were told the kitchen had just been hit with a bunch of orders. Literally, there was no one else in the restaurant and where we were seated you could see in the kitchen & no one was cooking anything. Finally another 10 minutes go by and a server checks with the kitchen again and then came over and said they had to remake the sandwich after it had been made with mayo despite being reminded 3 times that we requested it on the side. We finally got our food to go and left wishing we hadn’t tipped. I wouldn’t be surprised if we ordered at 1:15 and walked out after 2 still haven’t had eaten. Must’ve been 7 or 8 employees there and not one of them noticed anything wrong or apologized for the unreasonable wait. I don’t know who or what the issue was but it wasn’t the people who paid the bill. Whether it’s 1 pm or 9am you should get the same...

Most people seem to grab something and going. We were there for breakfast so we found a table and I made out order. We elected to have eggs benedict. We were not disappointed. The scratch made biscuits were actually the icing on this savory cake. They were amazing!
We also got two chocolate hazelnut babkas to go, but it took a little while to get our food so we ended up eating the babkas while we waited. Um, they were incredible. This place is a knock it out of the park café that you don't see coming. I hope the folks of Baker City know what a treasure this café is. We were spending the rest of the week looking for any possible openings in our schedule that we could try and go back here. It wasn't possible, but we are looking to head there in the next week or two because we can't stop thinking about that meal.
The service was a little slow, but they were training some new folks and it was really busy, so I can't fault them for some hiccups. They were all very lovely people doing their best. When they get everyone trained and work out the kinks what a miracle of modern small business they will be.
