Moss Mansion Museum — Local services in Billings

Historical home of some of the first settlers of Billings. A relatively Opulent Mansion for the area, that made great use of the railway and their connections with business conglomerates to build.

Managed by the Billings Preservation Society, the site is undergoing many restoration projects, such as failing ceiling tiles in the kitchen that they are collecting donations for.

Tours start in the basement from the west doors, not the main entrance; The gift shop has more books and crafts from local authors and business partners than Moss specific trinkets.

Although the family, seemingly, did not respect other cultures and religions, the Society is taking great care to ensure that items in their collection from Masonic, Native Crow, and other cultures are presented with sensitivity and respect.

There is water damage and crackling in several rooms, and a handful of discrepancies between the guided tour and information presented in placards and posters throughout the Mansion.

I have so many good things to say about Moss Mansion. If you like history and old fashioned houses this is the place for you. The house and grounds are absolutely stunning and if you decide to do a self guided tour there is still a lot of information available for you to read. They have guided and self guided tours, but I would highly recommend doing a guided tour if possible. Everyone who works there seems very knowledgeable and pleasant. Will definitely be going back. I came here a 2nd time closer to Christmas and the decorations were stunning!! Now just need to go back for Halloween. What a magnificent home! Every room was a delight to see. The eclectic furnishings was so much fun to see! The house was on the cutting edge of technology. The bathrooms were wired with electric curling iron heaters for the ladies of the house!! You never knew what country, let alone the continent, would greet you from the next room. The house is immaculately cared for and preserved. The yard, gardens too were a joy to walk through. I was amazed that Mr Moss was into everything from banks to irrigation, to utilities bring hot water heat to the city . He was creative and brilliant with an eye toward the future.
