Paper Source — Local services in Birmingham

Came into Papersource on 2.9.22 to purchase another pair of heart sunglasses and some pretty paper. As I was inside, there was another customer in the store at the time. When I came in the employee did greet me and asked if there was anything she could help me with. I told her yes and she asked if there was anything else and I said no thank you. I proceeded to shop around and as I shopped around I noticed the employee was watching me. I often give people the benefit of the doubt, so although I was done shopping, I wanted to make sure it wasn’t my imagination. I walked towards the back of the store where the other customer was and she turned the direction I was walking and pretended to straighten up cards that were already perfectly positioned. After I noticed that, I told her I was ready to check out. When I got to the register I asked her who was the manager and she said that she was. Her name was Sara Beth and said she was one step down from the Regional Director. She then asked, “why’d you ask” and I said to her, Oh just curious - I wonder if you follow all of your black customers around. She said oh I’m sorry I didn’t notice I was doing that and she was like you were the only one in here and I pointed to a customer behind her and Sara Beth said “oh I didn’t even notice her.” My response was: “of course you didn’t”. She apologized for watching me and I responded don’t apologize for being you.

It’s unfortunate that as a black woman I cant have the freedom to shop in a cute store such as Papersource without feeling like I’m stealing - which I would never do. I have no reason to steal anything - I work hard just like anyone else for anything I have.

I will be calling corporate to share my experience.
