I had a very unfortunate (not to mention very insulting) experience….as others have had here. The owner accused me of being drunk (I had not had a single drink) and was just extremely rude. I was buying my husband (who was outside with our dog) beer. I am 37 years old. He ended up having to come purchase it, yet both of the people in front of me checking out were CLEARLY intoxicated. I have no idea what is going on with this “owner”, but she will loose her business soon if she doesn’t learn customer service after “30 years in the business”. This was the fourth year we have stayed in boothbay for about two weeks. I’ve never had a good experience at this store, but this one was absolutely my worst. Just stay away from the general store. Terrible, drive 2 hours to Boothbay. We checked in to our inn, got on a scenic tour boat and walked back into town. Looked for a place to get a small bottle of liquor to walk back too the inn! Walked in and there was nobody around, finally a lady walked out and asked what we needed. We told here what we wanted and she told us we’re going to have an uncomfortable talk. She Wouldn’t sell a pint of liquor to us. No reason why. My wife and I are 44+ and have successfully raised 2 kids who are now adults. We are on vacation finally, and not at all drunk. Absolutely awful!!! The person behind the register was incredibly rude. As I started to check out a lady came in obviously stressed trying to buy a bottle of water for her mom that needed to take medication. The person behind the register told her “cash only unless you’re spending $5.” She explained the emergency. He didn’t care. I immediately told her to take the water and I’d pay for it.
