I grew up going here since I was little, but took a break from skating in order to focus solely on college. My last visit to the place I was ecstatic, because my grandfather known and respected by the staff and the owner worked there, and I was looking forward to seeing his case they have with his uniform and everything that the owner himself had put in in memorial of his hard work for the place. Instead, I was disappointed. It has gone from something respectable, to chaotic. Nobody announces the rules anymore, nobody except one tries to keep the rules known, no one listens to the staff about the rules, and I was too terrified to move in fear of running into someone. It had new lighting which made it very difficult to see, making me more anxious, and both teens and children running around without caution. I even found people without skates on entering the floor, which would have gotten you instantly pulled off to the side by an employee before. What has happened to this place?! I am honestly disappointed in what has become of the place that my grandfather respected.
I do not think I can stomach going in there again, not unless it is when the owner is there like he used to be, or just to pop in and say "Hey" to my grandfather's case. He would be ashamed of the sorry state it has become. I even heard from people I knew as a child who were regulars saying how disgusted they were in its "Fall". I had heard before from an friend who is a regular every weekend there tell me it had fallen from itself, that it was chaos, and that nobody regarded the rules for safety at all anymore. One of the rules that would have gotten anyone instantly approached by an employee in the past was "No skates, then no entry". It is still "Skate at your own risk" though, but I felt like I was dodging metaphorical bullets the whole time. I mostly sat at the table hanging my head and only getting up to "chat" with my grandfather's case.
Next time I go, it will be to tell my grandfather's memorial case goodbye, and to say farewell to the regulars. The last thing I ever thought I would see, is the utter destruction of the only place relating to the best childhood memories I have, and what few good memories I have of my childhood.
Farewell Skate Castle, they let the rule-breaking go for too long, and now it is beyond saving you. Take care of my...
Read moreAll I can say is I was blown away, this place is like a living breathing time capsule (in a good way!). From the exterior the building looks... abandoned to say the least. Now the inside however, that's a completely different story. The inside is so cool, it's like a blast from the past. Skate castle has a beautiful hardwood skating floor, plenty of space to sit, watch TV, eat snacks, or even play arcade games. The owner is extremely nice and very helpful. One staffer even came out on the floor to help teach some of our kids how to skate. The limbo was an awesome added touch! If you're going to rent skates I recommend bringing a bike helmet and wearing long socks so you do not get blisters. The facilities were very clean and tended to and the interior of the building seems to have a fresh coat of paint on everything that can be painted. Bring some change and play some arcade games when the kids knees get banged up, trust me. At the moment this place is temporarily closed to the general public as per the owner for an unknown reason but you can still reserve a private party on special occasions which is how I was able to capture these images and provide this review. If you're in the area this upcoming September 2022 I would definitely make a visit as this place is well worth the very...
Read moreWhen I was in HIGH SCHOOL, Back in the DAY. My FRIENDS & I would TRAVEL to DIFFERENT ROLLER SKATING RINKS & have fun SKATING. Some of the RINKS were NOT SAFE or CLEAN. There were ONLY 2 that WAS WORTH DRIVING to, The "SKATE CASTLE" in BUTLER & "CHES-ARENA" in CHESWICK. "ARDMORE SKATING RINK" was ALWAYS having PROBLEMS & the FOREST HILLS POLICE being called. The "TWIN WILLOWS" NEVER had set hours. My FRIENDS & I would double date & DRIVE-UP from PITTSBURGH to go to The "SKATE CASTLE" & Stop at a Local Pizza Place afterwards. We LIKED THE CHOICE OF SONGS that were played DURING COUPLE SKATES & DURING All Skate. 1 Night an ORGANIST PLAYED & the MUSIC CHOICES were FANTASTIC. The RINK'S Floor was ALWAYS CLEAN & SHINY & Sometimes Fast bc of what they put on the SURFACE. BUT THE DRIVE TO "SKATE CASTLE" WAS WORTH THE DRIVE & THE PRICE OF GAS WAS ...
