My experience at this store was terrible. I am a new student at UIUC and took a bus to get there. Since I don’t know the place very well, I didn’t realize the store is located far from the crowded area and don’t feel safe walking all the way where the bus stop was. I decided to get an Uber back to campus, but my data was running low and I had trouble connecting to the Uber app. It was a stressful situation and I talked to the lady at the counter asking if I could use the internet/hotspot on her phone so I could connect to my app. I understand if it takes her a while to understand what this means, but I can usually feel when someone is really willing to help out, listen, and try to solve the situation with you. I feel like she was trying to escape the situation but didn’t want to be rude so she was still responding to my questions. She offered her phone instead although I explained to her I needed to connect to an Uber app using an internet service. Shortly after, a customer was heading to the check out area, and since I don’t feel that she really cares, I asked them if I could use the hotspot on their phone which they agreed to. I’m thankful that I arrived back to campus safely, but the people I met had the most unfriendly attitude. Even while I was waiting for my ride, she didn’t even seem to care or ask about anything. The people who let me use their internet hotspot left and I was just waiting for my ride inside the store. I don’t feel welcomed and it was certainly a bad experience being new in town, not knowing anyone and being treated like that. I’m a person of color but I don’t want to make that an emphasis- if I would like to put that into consideration, it can add to the uncomfortable situation I was in. I am not sure if the lady has a daughter, but if am a woman in her age, or myself, at least, will never treat a first year female student like this.
