Artspace 8 is one of the coolest galleries on Chicago’s magnificent mile. You can easily miss it because it’s in the Bloomingdale building at 900 N. Michigan Ave. I am originally from Chicago but have lived elsewhere for some years. I randomly stopped by the gallery shortly after it had closed and the owner was so accommodating. He saw me looking inside and unlocked his doors and let me in. I had an opportunity to see some beautiful artwork that he had on display. It was very unexpected because the gallery is bigger than it looks from the outside. The owner allowed me to look around the gallery at my own pace. He answered my questions about the different artists and work that he was showing. He was extremely professional and gracious with his time, especially since I arrived after closing. It is art gallery experiences like these that make the average person (myself) feel welcome and appreciated. The owner did not know me, but he genuinely treated me like I was an important collector and it was obvious that I was not. He explained some of the artwork me and invited me to come back to see new work when I am back in town. Artspace8 is a space for all people! We often think that art is only for connoisseurs and yes many times we explore galleries without any clue or knowledge, it just happens we walk in a gallery and in somehow art has an impact on us whether we are into it or not, leaving us with an impression. It is inevitable to respond to the surrounding, to capture a specific information, to generate emotions when we expose ourselves to elements that solicit our senses. I had a chance in multiple occasions to attend “The Class” every Thursday, host and held by Fidel Rodriguez vibrant artist, founder of the gallery, and this is exactly what happens in Fidel’s classes, an immersive moment to let out your strains, to go through the vortex of your own colors, to find them, without judgement, without expectations, and yes a blank canvas can be intimidating for artists and for a newcomer, but this is one chance to be feisty, to know about the unknown, a new space, new people, new gestures, to learn about new tools, awake your creativity, your vision, your adaptivity and starting with a stoke, either bold or thin, you will get on that canvas the inside out, your inside out, your art. I have lived in Chicago now 4 years. I have seen all the attractions Chicago has to offer. I highly recommend visiting this gallery. It truly is a breathtaking experience. I have known Fidel for such a short time but he has always made this art space much more than an exhibition but more of a unforgettable experience.

Being an artist myself, I value well done work and I know how much time, heart, thought, and emotion can be put into work. It is important to us artist, how our work is displayed to our audience because the art needs to speak alone for itself. The strategic way Fidel optimizes his space to give his viewers the ULTIMATE experience is fenomenal! You can really feel the meaning and stories that are being told. 🤯💯❗️ Not only is the space beautiful but he gives it such a sense of community which can be very challenging but he pulls it off so flawlessly.
