Walnut room was lovely, but after we decided to go to the lowest floor where it connects to the subway and walk around. We were burning time till about 6:53 because that was about 3 mins until our train would come. (planning ahead because its really cold and my elderly mom has some back issues that get worse with the cold, but she was excited to go visit the Walnut room for the first time.)
Anyway, I know that the door that connects to the subway closes at 7pm. I double checked with a worker upstairs too and they said it closes at 7pm. Should be no problem. They locked the door about 10 mins early. I went and asked the girl at the register when the doors close, she confirmed 7pm. I said alright, its not 7 yet, is there any chance you could unlock it for a second for us to leave? She said she didn't have the keys. I asked who did (it was 18 degrees out, if it was warmer I never would have bothered). and she called her manager over. I asked if they could unlock it for a minute for us to go out as my mother has some major back issues and the cold makes it worse. Was immediately told no and I asked again that it closes at 7pm? she agreed and said they're closing early so they closed it. (zero notice of that at all, no signs, no overcome, nothing, no other area of the store said they were closing early, etc). I explained my mom has back issues and is elderly, with it being so cold could it be opened as its not 7pm yet. Was told no again, as they don't do that. No consideration for the cold or for the elderly given they made a last second change to their rules.
Another thing, in the perfume section. I went to pick up a gift box of cologne, I just wanted to know how much it cost as they have a lot of black Friday sales and I like buying my SO good cologne. But I need to know the price so I can see how much the sale brought it down. immediately jumped with "hi, can I help you with something?" not in a way that sounded even remotely like she wanted to help but in a way she was worried I would steal it. Frankly it made me really nervous so I just left the section immediately. Just because I'm young doesn't mean I want to steal, I don't have the ability to know how much it cost without looking and I dont make enough money yet to just buy things off the shelf without checking.
Anyway, really not great experience and it will likely be one of the last times I buy from macys. I dont need to be looked at like a thief because I want to know the price or hear about retail workers being lazy because they want to lock the door early then not show any compassion to costumers who have aliment or aren't used to 18...
Read moreHaving lived in several major cities where Macy's has taken over grand old department store buildings, I can say when Macy's shows up, you can pretty much accept the fact that an era has ended. I see some glowing reviews here, perhaps coming from people that don't realize what "used to be".
This is true of the State St. Chicago location (as well as the Wanamaker building in Philadelphia). I unfortunately never got to visit Marshall Field's prior to the change. I did visit the new Macy's not too long after the take over. At that time, the store still felt kinda festive, but I could tell some of the grandeur was already gone. Now, in 2022, the store is but a whisper of what it once was. Granted, Covid played a big part...and traffic in the store still isn't back up to "exciting" yet. I have some ideas about what's going on.
I don't think the location is a destination as it once was for city dwellers. Because downtown is changing rapidly, there also isn't the type of foot traffic there once was, from people converging on the loop for work. So a lot of the customers are visitors, or maybe residents who happen to have made the trip down. Retail is also quickly changing, and the department store as an icon is dwindling. But a lot of it has to do with Macy's itself. I happened to work at the Herald Square location in the 80s and THAT was still an exciting place (not so much anymore). I also worked for Macy's again in the early 2000s in King of Prussia, PA. That's when I realized how bland the company had gotten. Presentation, the type of employees, and general atmosphere all have gone to pot. At State St. even, once you leave the main floor, some of the employees are dressed like they're going to a picnic, not selling "finer retail". Plus, Macy's pretty much stretched themselves too thin, placing multiple stores within short distances. The Water Tower/Michigan Ave. store has had to close.
That being said...the building as an architectural feature is still amazing. Please do some reading about the history of Marshall Field's and the eventual residency of the store in this location. Do take time to view the amazing "Tiffany Dome" that was designed by Tiffany himself. And yes...they still have a "bargain basement" where you can find incredible markdowns, although it's on the 2nd floor (well, men's is). AND...one of the few stores that still has an extensive candy dept!!! I will say that Macy's also is one of the only chains that WILL put in good effort to decorate for...
