If you find yourself in Upstate New York, and more specifically the Kingston area, do yourself a favor to stop by “The Department of Things”. This gem of a screen printing studio has a wonderfully curated stationary/ art supplies/ gift store up front and is run by two extraordinary people - Kristin and John. They are an artist and a curator/professor respectively - they know their stuff AND make it all fun and accessible. Whether you are just browsing the store or are there for one of their wonderful workshops. “The Department of Things” is a magical place for children and grown ups alike. “Art and snacks?! This place is amazing!” was overheard at one time or another. P.S. Best name ever!

My daughters and I had the best visit to The Department of Things! The owner, Kristin, is so creative and has all sorts of fun little projects to keep the kids entertained. In addition to the screen printing (which was so fascinating to watch) she also had my girls work on a little hand sewing project making adorable felt mice that they then were able to paint. There were so many fun supplies to use and the little gift shop she has in the front of the studio is chock full of interesting treasures. We can’t wait to come back for another visit the next time we’re in the Hudson Valley!

We spent the afternoon doing a family screen printing workshop. Two of us worked on prints on felt for hand sewn plushies while two of us worked on prints for greeting cards. All of us enjoyed the experience and really got into it. It was almost magical to see our hand drawn sketches turn into repeatable print! Kristin has a welcoming and cozy studio. She is a good teacher and also has a well curated selection of art supplies and stationery for sale. Such a good addition to Kingston. We plan to visit soon!

I recently took a beginner silkscreen class at The Department of Things in Kingston, and it was such a wonderful experience! Kristin made the process approachable, easy to follow, and so much fun—perfect for someone like me who had never tried screen printing before. Kristin is warm, knowledgeable, and welcoming, which made the whole class even more enjoyable.

The studio itself is beautiful and inviting, and the shop up front is full of unique treasures like pens, gifts, cards, and art supplies. I've had my eye on Beam Paints for a while now, and this was the only place I've seen them (and swatches!) in person.

I would totally recommend trying a class and checking out the...
