Nov 27th update: So I wanted to update in response to the reply that I just received from Pauper's. Again I had the glowing five-star review for over 7 years and never had a reply but as soon as I dropped the one star... I was worthy of a reply I suppose. But I did want to add that the books were not new. They were 100% not new. I even have pictures of the books and the prices because I had sent them to my husband and said look at these prices on the used books now. I'm not saying that some of those books were not new. Because I did recognize a few of them as new books. But there were a few used ones in there for the same price as the new ones. I'm happy to hear that the prices are not being raised. However someone did mislabel some of your used books then.
(This is my review after I saw the price raising around Halloween) Have had this as a 5 star rating for over 7 years, but had to alter it slightly today as I was extremely disappointed in the raising of prices on R.L. Stine books. 7.99-8.99 each?!? I read and collect them, and I was saddened to see that. I love to support my local bookstore, but that is just too much. I will order those from ebay now for the 1.99-3.00 price range that paupers once had. Not sure if they are trying to increase it do to Halloween, but either way, just chose to not buy here. Please reconsider these price jumps on these books.
(Below is my review that was on Google for 7 years with no response from the owner) What can I say about this place, besides, that it is like stepping into a Narnia for book lovers! Absolutely in love with this place. I have been meaning to stop by for quite awhile now, and I never seemed to....but I finally did recently and wow, just wow. I found a couple great books that first visit, and then returned again a couple days later to buy a bunch of random books that I was looking for. They even had a Stephen King book that I have been wanting for awhile and couldn't find decently priced anywhere.
From the moment you walk in, you can envelope yourself in that amazing book smell! (if you love books, you know the one!!!) and find many books to go on fun adventures and occupy your mind. The decorations and chairs in the little nooks are great, and it just feels warm and welcoming. They have bargain books out front for 1.00 and they are super friendly and helpful.
So don't be like me and procrastinate, if you love books (they also have dvds, cds, comics and vinyls) then stop by and browse around. Reading is great and I love this store! I hope that it is always here. Clayton is lucky to...
Read moreI love visiting this bookstore and have great conversations with some of the employees who work there. However, I had a very problematic encounter with one employee when I was working at Lowes Foods, before I found my new career. I don't know his name, but a particular employee was very passive-aggressive when all I was trying to do was have a conversation. I found it rude and a bit narcissistic for him to tell me, 'You should be appreciative of the books you have.' He then proceeded to say, 'I hope you find more in your life besides working at Lowes Foods.' While he may not have meant it negatively, it truly angered me, and it made me hesitant to buy many books there. How could he tell me that when he literally works at a bookstore and makes less than me? It really got under my skin. What was he trying to say—that I am poor and have no class for buying $50 to $80 worth of books on my break when I was working at Lowes Foods? It has made me not want to ever step foot in the store again, all because this young, long-haired, lanky kid couldn't close his mouth and sell me my books. I am not trying to be negative or slander anyone in this review, as I genuinely like some of the people who work there and enjoy the family atmosphere. But that day, his behavior really heated me up. He took away the enjoyment of coming there to buy and appreciate books without any kind of prejudice. How is someone who makes less than me going to tell me how I should go about buying my books? How is someone who made less than me when I worked at Lowes Foods going to act like there should be more to my career than working for a grocery store? He had no room to talk. He doesn't know me. I shouldn't have to be chastised for what kind of books I want to read. I'll never step foot here again just because I don't wanna ruin the peace or the...
Read moreStopped by the grocery store after an extremely long day and needed to get a copy of a Stephen King book so the wife could take it with her on her 4 day trip up to Ohio. Lights were on and there were 6-7 people sitting around talking with one guy behind the cash register. It was a little after their posted hours so I asked if they were still open. The guy responded with only for the " Nerd Club". Thought he was joking and asked if I could grab a paperback if he had it, glad to pay in cash. I guess he sold enough books that day and told me nope, sorry. Can't fault him for being closed, but just sitting around shooting the breeze seems that I could have made a five minute incursion dropped an extra 10 bucks or so into his wallet. So I tacked another forty or so minutes onto my having to drive up to the local Walmart. They had the book, probably cost more then what he was charging but mission accomplished. Either way I guess I'm not cool enough for the nerd club. I know that my business or lack there of won't impact his bottom line, but I spent quite a bit of money over the years there's since relocating to Clayton. Sadly, Amazon or a tap of a button and you have any book you want is going to make these guys go the way of Eddie McKays and the ill gotten Dodo Bird. I'll miss being able to browse and walking out with several more books then I...
