Did the technicians at Choate's intentionally mess up my ac unit to charge more money for future repairs? Possibly.
Or are the technicians lacking proper training? Possibly.
I first called Choate’s 2 years ago to do an annual tune up of my AC unit. We had lived in the house 3 years prior with no unit issues whatsoever, but I figured it was a good idea to do a tune-up. I called Choate’s since they had good reviews online. The tech came out and performed the service and also repaired a vent hood issue we had on our hot water heater. Within a month of the service (during the first really hot day of the year) my unit stopped blowing cold air. Choate’s came back out and said that our refrigerant had leaked out (this had never been a problem before), but we figured that it happens. So we bought the Choate’s family plan and got the refrigerant charged. However, the new tech also said the vent hood was not properly repaired and would have to be redone. Okay, no problem. It happens. The second tech repaired the vent hood again.
The following year, we had another tech come out and do the annual tune-up and AGAIN within a month our unit stopped blowing cold air on the first hot day of the year. We had another tech come out and say the capacitor (which was reported during the tune-up a month prior to be fully functional) was damaged and need to be replaced. Okay, a little suspicious, but capacitors can go out. We paid for the capacitor to be replaced.
And guess what??? A month after the repair our unit again stops blowing cold air!!
So I am calling a different company for my future repairs and writing this review so that other home owners are aware that the coincidences might be more related then Choate’s lets on. And if anyone from Choate’s is reading this review, yes I reported these issues to your customer support and management team and got apologies from them followed by the repair bills from your technicians.
For clarification: my unit is less than 10 years old and didn’t have issues before starting tune ups.
Update: new company confirmed that last technician did not clean AC unit as stated which contributed in the capacitor burn out and to the cooling...
Read more!!!BUYER BEWARE!!! Spent almost $900 with Choate's in August last year for a mediocre Honeywell thermostat - nothing fancy except for a high markup. Less than a year later (end of June), it goes out. Scheduled for them to come out since they installed the first one. We scheduled service for a few days later - that Friday between 10AM - 5PM. At around 7PM on Friday, the tech called to say they couldn't make it but they'd be out the following day. The next day, the tech finally showed up a little after 4 and was there until 7 or so. Not a big deal because we get how many other houses needed servicing at the same time in the awful summer heat.
As for the thermostat, we thought surely it could be replaced under warranty, or they could at least review their own handywork to see why the thermostat would already be out. Nope!! Technician claimed it was either faulty wiring (from the first tech) or a bad motherboard on the outdated HVAC unit (because we are one of millions of American households still using the R-22 refrigerant). This tech focused on the outdated aspect and tried hard to peddle a new unit to us in addition to repeatedly peddling the friends and family subscription you pay to get them to come out faster. Ended up spending another $900 because we couldn't replace the thermostat under warranty since we couldn't prove it was a faulty thermostat nor prove the last tech's fault in wiring it. We bore the financial burden because it was just easier to place all blame on a unit, which 70 million of us still use, that worked perfectly until the thermostat went out and shut...
Read moreDo not recommend at all! My mother has been dealing with them for the past few years trying to get them to fix everything they have done. Originally had a new unit and vents installed. Shortly after install, noticed there was low airflow coming from the vents and condensation leaking from wall vents. Then when having the floors redone our contractor pointed out THE DUCTS WERE JUST LAYING ON THE GROUND AND SOME WERE HALF CONNECTED HANGING OFF! Not to mention it seemed they knocked some blocks off and never put them back. Called them out to "repair it" was told it would fix everything. WELL IT DID NOT. There was more airflow downstairs, but upstairs there was still condensation and little airflow. After back and forth for almost a year with their "warranty" we gave up and called a new company to come out and take a look. First thing they told us was they recommended us the wrong sized unit the house. It was designed for a house half this size. How, over the calls for 3 years, was this overlooked? Now after shelling out $10k more on top of of everything Choate's was paid, there is a new unit that is the correct size, proper airflow from all vents without condensation, and damage from the condensation on the walls and floors we...
