I own three Microscope LED units for my Global Dental microscopes. Unfortunately, these units are poorly supported—no replacement parts are available from the manufacturer, and once the 3-year warranty expires, a failure means paying $2,800 plus tax and shipping for a new one. Ouch. Over the last few years, I’ve had to replace multiple units, as they all seemed to fail after about four years.
I tried two electronic repair services (including one connected to an electronics supplier in Costa Mesa) but had no luck. Recently, when my wife told me yet another light was failing—and since she relies on them working perfectly—I started searching again for a reliable repair shop.
Newport TV VCR Repair was honestly my last thought, since I assumed they wouldn’t know how to handle specialized medical lighting. But when the last light went down and we were about to order costly replacements, I decided to give them a try. I had already tested a re-manufactured unit from eBay, but it was nowhere near the right brightness. Newport TV VCR Repair was nearby, and I was in a rush, so I called Bill.
When I brought the three lights in, Bill admitted he’d rather not take on the job, but said if I wanted, he could do a full diagnostic for a fee. I agreed. A few days later, right on schedule, he called back. He believed he could repair them but would need to order parts. If the repairs worked, I’d pay him; if not, I’d just be out the diagnostic fee.
Sure enough, Bill repaired two units successfully (currently working on the last which got more damaged by the other repair shops). He even walked me through the work—replacing chips (and programming them), a surface-mount capacitor, blown board trace and even correcting an incorrectly installed MOSFET. The lights now work flawlessly.
Bill is incredible. This is far beyond simple AV repair—his skill, honesty, and thoroughness are rare to find. If you need electronics repair, take your equipment here. I’m very glad I did.
If you are a Global Dental Microscope LED owner who needs to get a repair and found this by a Google search, I would recommend calling...
Read moreI find the guy with the "red blinking light" and the one star review to be highly suspect. 20/20 or some "investigative" TV show aired awhile back catching evil TV repair guys in the act of defrauding stupid people that don't know how to use a remote. Anyway, Bill is very professional. He calls back when he says he will. He charges $10 to look at your gear and then lets you know what he can or can't do and how much it will cost. He did a great job repairing an H/K receiver of mine and my experience was great. He certainly spent more than an hour tracking down and fixing the problem on my receiver yet he charged me the 50 bucks he estimated the fix to be. Honest and professional...
Read moreBill Tran at Newport TV Repair did a great job repairing my 2012 Marantz SR4023, the resultant repair worked well, he was very courteous and respectful, he was also very efficient and finished the repair in only (2) days. Coincidentally, another Electronic Repair Shop in Huntington Beach that praises itself on the internet as repairing everything, they could not repair this problem, and could not even figure it out, charging me anyway, however, Bill Tran knows what he's doing, and figured it quickly and charged less than the sloppy shop that could not figure it out. I would very much recommend Bill Tran and Newport TV Repair in Costa Mesa at 370 East...
