I know what you are thinking…custom jewelry? I’m not Jay-Z or Beyonce. Why should I get custom jewelry made? Well, I’m just a regular guy too, just like you. I was looking for a ring and was striking out with the retail jewelry stores. I kind of always have an idea what I want and was just not having any luck this time. Everything was too traditional or couldn’t be resized and I felt like I was being pushed to buy something that I didn’t 100% want just because it was in stock. Out of frustration I started looking for other options and found Jewelry Theory while browsing around. I called but was initially skeptical about doing a custom piece. I was still in the mindset of buying retail. I’m not made of money, and I didn’t think my budget would really get me much. Boy, was I wrong.

First off, Tom kept my budget in mind and tailored the piece to stay within that budget, I never had to mention it again. The design process was actually a lot of fun. We just met at his office for about an hour and told him what we wanted while he feverishly clicked away designing. Tom walked us through all the steps, took our suggestions and modified them only when they wouldn’t work in the real world. His design process lets you see the ring (or whatever) in real time. Change the stone, move something, you see it all and can go back if you don’t like it. Once we settled on what we wanted he rendered some high res versions so we could see it and think about it. The renderings looked 100% real, you’d swear it was a photo of a real ring. Then they make a wax version so you can try it on to make sure it fits and looks the way you want, then they cast the real thing. I was floored at how fast the process was. I’m sure Tom wouldn’t want me to promise a timeline here but, in our case, the entire process was just a little over 2 weeks! With Christmas looming! I’m sure we are outliers, his initial estimate was about 4 – 5 weeks, and that would have been fine. Of course, your mileage may vary.

To say I’m a happy camper is the understatement of the year. The price was on target. The time to complete was amazing. The ring is perfect and literally one of a kind. It is exactly what we wanted and what he promised. The entire process couldn’t have been better. This may be the only thing Jay-Z, Beyonce, and I have in common, but I’ll take it.

I have known Tom for a number of years in our church, but have not dealt personally with him at a professional level. I can’t recommend Tom enough. This was an extremely smooth process that produced an exceptional personal artifact. I was going for minimal aesthetic, something with color and uniqueness without going over the top. No retailers had that at all.

The visualization tools they use are state of the art and Tom is a master at them. All this translates to their in-house production team who make the jewelry so it’s 1:1 design to output. And they provide a 3D printed sample to make sure the look is working.

We ended up with a 7mm tapered to 6mm for comfort (highly recommend this). The special part is the embedded row of gemstones—three deep blue, princess-cut sapphires set between two smaller, brilliant-cut diamonds. The glint you get in the sunlight is beautiful.
