I strongly advise against consigning your valuable items at Clotheshorse. My experience with this establishment, particularly with the owner, Wendy, has been profoundly negative and deeply distressing.
While for the past 10 years I have appreciated the diverse and unique selection at Clotheshorse, my long-term experience revealed a pattern of consistent disorganization and a disturbing lack of transparency in inventory and accounting. This past year, however, the situation escalated into a nightmare.
I experienced: Lost and Miscounted Items: A staggering 37 items vanished after being consigned last Spring. Wendy's (the owner) explanations were inconsistent, shifting from an "estate sale" to "storage," and ultimately, a complete lack of accountability. Improper Reimbursement: I was significantly underpaid for cocktail dresses and other valuable pieces.
Neglect and Avoidance: My attempts to resolve these issues were met with ignored calls, a perpetually full voicemail, excuses about computer errors that her husband needed to address, and a palpable sense of avoidance. It felt as though my calls were being deliberately screened.
Inappropriate Handling of Items: My Spring and Summer clothing, finally recovered in the middle of Winter, was placed on clearance racks during a February sale, drastically diminishing their value.
Insulting Reimbursement: After enduring months of stress and loss, wasted time and energy, I received a mere $19 check (WTF?!) for a significant number of missing items, including delicate blouses and high-end cocktail dresses.
Manipulative Accounting: The owner attempted to manipulate the count of my items, such as individually counting a set of athletic tops that were originally consigned as a single unit, seemingly to obscure discrepancies.
Broken Promises: Despite promising to provide an inventory and sales record, I have yet to receive any documentation. Adding insult to injury, the owner, made assumptions about my financial situation that were not only inaccurate but also deeply insensitive.
As a small business supporter, I am heartbroken to write this review. As an entrepreneur myself, I fully understand the challenges businesses face, especially with the pandemic and handling my own health crisis. However, the level of negligence and disregard I experienced is unacceptable.
Clotheshorse may be a pleasant place to shop, but it is a hazardous environment for consignors. Protect your valuable items and avoid the emotional and financial distress I endured.
To any consignment shop, may I suggest to remember that consignors are the lifeblood of your business. "Do not bite the hand that feeds you."
Be well and safe, friends. Thank you for taking the time to...
Read moreI really have appreciated every visit I've had here! I've had bad luck with a lot of consignment/resale shops out in Denver and it's particularly frustrating when I bring a whole box full of clothing and all of it gets passed on with little to no explanation. The owner here is always really conscious of explaining why she passes on an item and has even been so kind as to sort certain items into 'homework' piles for me where she points out a small stain or crease I may have missed. She'll tell me how to repair or clean the item so that the next time I come back they'd be willing to accept it. How thoughtful is that! Overall, great experiences each time and would recommend them to anyone looking for a friendlier resale...
Read moreI've shopped here several times, and the selection is great. The owner is excellent at making sure everything is in perfect shape, and all of the pieces I've bought have been really high quality. Definitely worth a stop! (The owner's mother is also the sweetest — she helped me pick out several things that I've really loved. It was like having my own personal shopping...
