I am so baffled by the great reviews on here because my experience from start to finish has been the opposite.
We chose this store for our new baby bird based on the wonderful reviews and have been nothing but disappointed with our experience.
The only silver lining is that my baby bird is wonderful, but my experience with this store and its owner (?) has been abysmal.
Communication by these people is almost nonexistent. You have to call and text repeatedly for days before someone responds to answer any simple question, such as the brand of food my little bird was eating. That’s one red flag.
They refuse to tell my bird’s hatch date and the reason why they won’t tell me the date has changed each time I’ve asked. Now I suspect they are covering up something suspicious for an unethical breeder who they initially claimed was “their friend for many years in Florida” (yet they are unable to get the hatch date of a single baby bird they had received just a few days ago from that “friend”? It doesn’t make sense.)
My bird was underfed and underweight at their store but they didn’t know the weight because they weren’t weighing the baby. I asked multiple times why it was so small and their answer was “small parents” — in reality, he was starving. Several weeks later, he is strong and healthy and happy, and finally calming down (he was absolutely frantic for food from being underfed) and has gained 15-20 grams in weight from what he was when the store had him.
On top of all of this, the owner (Carmen?) is unbelievably rude and unprofessional. In every interaction I’ve had with her, she’s been rude, abrasive and unhelpful. I couldn’t believe I was giving her money to pay for my new friend while being treated like crap, and the only reason we still bought our bird here is because I had already paid a deposit to Dakota before meeting the owner and had been looking forward to the process at that time.
Every interaction with the Exotic Bird Ranch after paying my initial deposit has been a nightmare and I was crying before I picked my bird, wishing I could have gone to a reputable breeder or a bird store that actually cares about the birds and their new owners.
At least I would know when my bird was born.
Such a huge red flag in the bird industry — the only brokers who do not know their birds’ hatch dates are disreputable commercial breeders and illegal smuggling operations. Neither of whom deserve your money or trust…!
I do not and could never recommend this store under its current ownership. I wouldn’t want anyone to ever be treated the way I have been treated when you are picking out your new little friend for the next...
Read moreAs much as I want to love this place for their beautiful and rare parrots, I keep having one bad experience after another for the past eight months. I generally don't write negative reviews but for how expensive these birds are ($2k+) they should really be more organized as a business.
They don't call back when they say they will over and over again. In fact, they have not once called me back when they said they would, it's always me following up.
It also took 6+ months longer than expected to get my parrot I put a deposit on--they said it was because they were not eating enough and had to keep him longer, but as soon as I brought him home he was a wonderful eater and instantly gained weight. If anything it was probably the stress of being in a tiny cage shared with another parrot with no toys or anything to do. I felt so bad for them, I bought toys for them from the shop. They sell toys but don't give them to their own birds, it's sad.
The company they use DNA tests for also constintently screws up. It took THREE blood tests to get the gender of the bird I bought there. I took one of my other birds in for a DNA test in which they had to cut their nail for blood twice, then the test ended up getting wet and ruined. Not putting them through this stress again, especially as I live an hour away.
One other thing that bothers me a lot but might not matter to others is they don't provide the parrots hatch date even though they get the birds from a breeder. They initially told me my parrot was four months old, but I had put the deposit down more than four months prior and they had put the ad on Facebook for this bird more then 6 months prior so I HAVE NO IDEA THE AGE OF MY PAREOT--FROM A BREEDER.
Two stars is generous for the customer service here but they get an extra because I love my parrot a lot. However, I will not be going back ever again. And definitely not recommending to others as a bird lover. It just seems like they are in it for...
Read moreAfter a lengthy search for a DNA female Hahns Macaw from a breeder I felt I could trust, I was very fortunate to have found Carmen and Dakota. They did not disappoint! I was greeted at the door by a beautiful, very large Macaw with quite the life story. As I looked around my first impression was how immaculate the store looked and smelled, everything organized, every cage clean. There were a number of birds, all healthy and happy, some quite rare, all lovingly cared for. My Hahns was not quite weaned yet so Carmen patiently taught me how to feed her, from mixing the formula to feeding from a bottle. They thoroughly answered all my questions…during my two day visit from my hometown of Chicago, to numerous texts, and occasional phone calls. I learned so much from them and it’s made me a much better bird “parent”. My only negative was that my visit was too short, I really would have loved to spend more time with them! If you can, go visit them. You’ll enjoy...
