I grew up in an area where big box grocery store chains didn’t exist so walking into Detroit People’s Food Co Op felt like home! Everyone in store was so personable and made me feel welcome as a first time shopper. I’m beyond impressed with the selections available like, having the option to buy your grains, nuts and seasonings in bulk. Or being able to grab healthy and delicious options like @Baobab Fare in the prepared food section. Something that’s so underrated but so necessary! I was also able to shop Black owned brands that I love like Sepia Coffee Project & the Real Lorraine’s BBQ Sauces and find new-to-me brands like Detroiterant . They even had me singing Karoake at the end of my shopping trip. 😭 Knowing that my dollar is being used to uplift the community is exactly why I’ll be back here. #blackowned #detroit #blackled #communityowned #blackownedbusiness

I finally got to check this place out as it's a short walk/bike ride for me. (Yes, there is ample bike parking) šŸš²šŸ‘ I was very excited to finally see this come to fruition and support my local community while getting groceries. Their selection was surprisingly good with great deals on local faves and gorgeous (and some local) produce! They even had a wonderful garden plant selection from Keep Growing Detroit, and a variety of foods to meet special diets (vegan & gluten-free selections.) Their bulk foods were well priced and unique in options. I did get hot food from the Commons; dining on the BBQ chicken, Buffalo wings, and mac n cheese was a religious experience! 5 stars for friendliness, cleanliness & and selection, although I hope they get more dairy free options for milks/creamers. Also, I hope they fix the glitch in the system that charged me $18 for $1.67 worth of bulk walnuts. I went back to the store to get a refund and they couldn't figure that out, so I'll likely never get my $18 back, but it doesn't sully my experience and I'll just consider it a donation to a good thing in my neighborhood. In the meantime, check your receipts until they iron out all the glitches.

I had the pleasure of visiting this market this past Thursday. It was clean, organized and well stocked. I soon discovered they had a hot self-serve food station. Everything thing looked delicious, I read a color coded chart that stood on top of the food station that read dark green meant the dish was vegan, Every item available was listed on a dark green label. It didn’t matter to me I was getting me some anyhow it looked so good. I sanitized my hands and put on gloves before getting my food container as the sign stated. Just as I was scooping some Mac n cheese a lady came out. I asked ā€œ so everything is vegan? By my surprise she snaps ā€œ now why would you think it’s vegan when you see chicken up thereā€ I said you’ll lil saucy anit you, I’m just reading the sign she goes on ā€œ nall I’m just saying you see macaroni and all that other stuff and you gone ask if it’s Veganā€ at that point i politely walked to the trash and tossed in the half scoop of Mac I had managed to get in my container and walked away without saying another word. The audacity she had to speak to a customer as if I was some idiot and if vegan chefs can’t do amazing things or if vegan cheese don’t exist. That was a horrible first visit, probably the last. I Don’t know if the theme was rude restaurant. But WTH just happened was all I...

šŸ–¤ BEST SOUL FOOD IN THE D/MI BY SOOO FAR! THIS INCLUDES TASTE, QUALITY + PRICE. NO MATTER WHAT TIME U VISIT, U WILL ALWAYS FIND THE SANITARY SELF-SERVE BAR STOCKED FULL OF FRESH, HOT + DELICIOUS OPTIONS. (THATS NOT EASY TO DO ACROSS 8HRS W/ VARYING TRAFFIC, WHICH SUGGESTS āœ…PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE {REAL CHEFS/COOKS}, āœ…EXCEPTIONAL PLANNING + PREPPING, AND āœ…PRUDENT EXECUTION). CAN TELL THEY USE HIGH-QUALITY INGREDIENTS AND TAKE THEIR TIME PREPARING + PRODUCING THE BLACK COMMUNITY;S TRADITIONAL FAVES, BUT WITH UNIVERSAL APPEAL- FINE RESTAURANT QUALITY. SEEMS LIKE THEY ARENT BOTHERED TO SAVE OR SPARE EXPENSE LIKE SO MANY OF THEIR COMPS DO WHEN CUTTING CORNERS IN EVERYTHING FROM INGREDIENTS TO PRESENTATION + PACKAGING., SO THEY ARE ABLE TO MAINTAIN THESE SUPER HIGH STANDARDS ALL DAY. AND YET, STILL THE MOST AFFORDABLE MEAL IN TOWN, PROB BY ~50%! JUST YESTERDAY I PAID $25,30 FOR A SAD SUBSTITUTE AROUND THE CORNER. THE CO-OP'S COMMUNITY BOARD FEATURES LOTS OF COOL, INTERESTING, POTENTIALLY VALUABLE RESOURCES + LOCAL BUSINESS REFERENCES. MEMBERSHIP OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES FOR REPRESENTATION +...
